The BBC's Jonathan Head, who is at the scene, says there is a huge amount of chaos, with body parts scattered everywhere.
The attack took place close to the Erawan Shrine in the capital's central Chidlom district.
The explosion occurred at about 19:00 local time (12:00 GMT), with police saying it may have been caused by a motorcycle bomb.
No-one has yet said they carried out the attack.
Some reports said foreign tourists may have been among the casualties.

Thailand has its own Muslim problem, in the southern peninsular area.
Not unlike the Muslim problem in the Philippines.
Bangkok.... Thailand?
*cough* muslims *cough*
I can’t think of anybody in the world who doesn’t get along with thai people, well except that one group who hates everybody
Amish?
I’ve walked by that shrine hundreds of times and I’ve eaten in a hotel, don’t recall the name, on its “Forth Of July” celebration. It’s very likely that foreign tourists were the target of the Muslim insurgents. It’s an upscale area with none of the sleaze of Pat Pong. Our prayers for the injured and the Families of the dead.
There is no humor in this escalation of violence. The shrine was doubtless chosen because it was a Buddhist symbol, it was a safe area for locals and foreigners as well, it was a wealthy section of the city.
Ahh Phuket.
While I think this was Muslim caused, there is a chance it was the now out of power “Red Shirts” of Thaksin Shinawatra (sp?).
Dang. I was just in Bangkok 45 years ago.
Amish and Teens, are a specific american racial group. The proper term for this particular religious group is “Youth”
Uh er no. Its a Hindu shrine
Your right, of course. Buddhists do show respect at the shrine and ask for favors from the gods.
There is widespread use of Hindu iconography in Buddhist temples. However, the Hindu section of Bangkok is near Chitlom and a larger Hindu Temple - Wat Prasri Maha Umathewee (Wat Khaek) - nearby on Silom.
The video feed we are watching shows the shrine undamaged. Reports of the 19 said to have been killed, 15 are foreigners.
Of course way to early for any facts to confirmed. Hell Thai media has the bomb in three different locations surrounding the shrine.
We’ve talked to some relatives most of whom suspect IS but one thinks the Red Shirts did it. With the King close to Death and the Crown Prince raising his visibility. There has been a lot of underground smearing of him deserved or not. We hope for a peaceful transition and respect the role King Bhumibol has played.
