OH, how I’d love to see everyone of these punks staring down the barrel of an enemy’s weapon. And then see what he would say when one of our soldiers walked in and put a gun to the enemy’s head and asked “It’s him or you. You decide.”

I had much more in common with the Soviet Bloc tankers I expected to fight with and be killed by with 17-to-one odds in their favor when I was a teenage tank crewman in Germany, circa 1966-67. Two years later, I had more in common with most of the North Vietnamese Army regulars and Viet Cong/Viet Minh fighters in Vietnam than with the various factions of college protesters/draft dodgers/deserters back in the USA. The VC/NVA may have been my enemy, and the war we fought was brutal for both sides, but they soldiered on, fought their fight, and their politicians did not sell them out.

There have been other wars since then, for me, and for my country, and other enemies. But mostly, I can often find more respect for my enemies than for our national political leaders, both as individuals and entities.
