U.S. Board on Geographic Names, U.S. Geological Survey.

Did soebarkha consult them, or just act on his own as usual?

The Board of Geographic Names hasn’t acted because there has always been a controversy in Congress, i.e., the Ohio delegation opposes the change.

A law dating back to the 1940s gives the secretary of the interior the authority to make the change if the Board of Georgaphic names doesn’t respond to a request for a name change in a timely manner. She said today that she thought no decision in 40 years was not acting in a timely manner.
