I don’t believe it’s ego. There are MANY Christians who just don’t believe in ever doing anything where someone might get hurt. Jesus told inviduals to turn the other cheek, if someone takes something of yours, give them more, so they think that governments should do this as well. If someone walks on you, lay down and let them walk on you more.
I get in trouble in church (sideways and disapproving looks) for not being PC. The other week I spoke up in SS for America. It was ok when some guy started putting down America, but when I spoke up in support of America, I was starting trouble. WHATEVER!

I think you nailed it. Turning the other cheek is about the individual not the government.

When an individual turns the other cheek he is taking power back from the one attacking him. When you turn the other cheek you are making a decision to do that instead of automatically striking back which puts you in control of your situation.

It doesn't work that way for the government though.
