Maine firm thinks it has solution to New England’s energy woes
Bangor Daily News ^ | 9-4-15 | Darren Fishell

It just so happens that climate-changing carbon dioxide, worked up to a semi-liquid state, could play a part in reducing emissions of its gaseous counterpart and helping to solve New England’s energy challenges.

And it could create a range of new jobs in Maine, too.

David Stapp, president of the Wiscasset-based Peregrine Turbine Technologies, said the properties of carbon dioxide in a “supercritical” state — and its suitability for propelling a turbine — aren’t new.

But the circular system his company is developing for heating that supercritical carbon dioxide could be the new take on an old technology that helps power generators adapt to changing demands, in New England and elsewhere, regardless of fuel source.

“It doesn’t care what you’re burning in there to create the heat, and that opens a whole range of technologies,” Stapp said. “We can burn things that others could only dream of.”

Biomass, coal, poultry waste, whatever. The system also uses heat exchangers to recapture heat from the supercritical carbon dioxide after it passes through the turbine, cooling it again and reusing the heat for another go-round. The company estimates the turbine will be 30 percent to 60 percent more efficient than existing steam units.

“We’re coming into the marketplace at just the right time,” Stapp said. “There’s a real need for energy innovation.”

“It just so happens that climate-changing carbon dioxide, “ Stopped reading there. CO2 is not a “climate-changing gas. It is absolutely necessary for life on earth. Wrong premise at the start and everything that follows is usually wrong. What is never told is the carbon dioxide concentration—.03-.04 percent—and how a gas at such low concentration can change the climate. What about water vapor? Water is the principal mover of “climate” on earth but the enviro-wacks have yet to find a way to demonize water. Yet they try.

“The company has not yet built any test models of its design.”

REALLY longggggggg article about vaporware ...

“Stopped reading there”

The article is not about climate change.

In the Carnot Cycle currently used for steam power plants, the maximum efficiency is under 30%:

, so this looks like an improvement.

Fair enough, went back and read the post. It is about power generation. Then why start the article with a false premise?

Why the hell don’t they try burning trash dump garbage and construction waste?

“Then why start the article with a false premise?”

The writer just threw that in ‘for good measure’ and to make the boss happy.

“Why the hell don’t they try burning trash dump garbage and construction waste?”

They said they could burn just about anything for this.

OPPS! The Carnot efficiency for these operating temperatures would be 63.9% So the trick is that you can get a higher top end temperature using CO2 instead of steam.

“so this looks like an improvement.”

In theory it is but Sandia is doing a lot of testing to benchmark their thermo properties and high speed turbine efficiencies.

All of you freepers have to remember that the BDN “bangor daily newspaper” is moonbat central up here in the state....I had lived in Bangor awhile....typical moonbat city...with it’s methadone clinic gay bars and the like. The airport is nothing to write home about ...way to costly to fly out of there and it is also a welfare magnet.....I moved further south in the state and found a half-way conservative section...This high end heat supply to spin the generator is pretty complex and the money would be better spent on building an incinerator plant too ship trash in by rail and spin a turbine that way and sell the electricity back to Maine power...but if that happened the trend of $2.00 town trash bags would fly out the window. They actually are doing this up here now...you MUST purchase two dollar trash bags or you get NO trash picked up even though property taxes are supposed to cover it...but I digress...it is a scam to get some taxpayer grants in order to make a 1/13th scale working model...Build an incinerator and use the top turbines now made and spin it with steam...K.I.S.S.(keep it simple stupid)

The Carnot is for an ideal reversible cycle which is not obtainable in the real world.

The Rankin cycle is more applicable to vapor systems but as you noted are limited in max temperatures. The Brayton cycle is the ideal cycle for gas turbines.
