Donald Trump is one of those political figures that people either love or they hate. There are very few who fall in the middle. There are some conservatives who insist on bashing Trump. There are those who dont like Trump for a myriad of reasons.
While Im not supporting Trump, Im not bashing him either.
Why not?
Conservatives owe Donald Trump a debt of gratitude. Trump single handedly brought the issue of illegal immigration to the forefront. If it was up to the Republican Establishment, this issue would have sat on the back burner. Ted Cruz and maybe a couple of others would have mentioned it but it would not be the headline issue.
Trumps marketing line is, Make America Great Again. He has done something with that the rest of the Republican field has not been able to do. The line reminds everyone how much of a failure the Obama Regime and the Party of Treason have been.
People like Trump because Trump is a winner.
Am I supporting Trump?
No.
I still support Ted Cruz.
Am I going to bad mouth Trump? No.
Trump is a winner. He believes in winning. That is quite different from people like Jeb Bush who would rather lose than see a conservative win.
Where does Trump stand on a lot of important issues? His past support of Democrats, single payer healthcare and restrictions on the 2nd Amendment are very disturbing. People change and it is entirely possible Trump has changed.
Im still waiting to see.
I still think Ted Cruz is going to be the nominee.
What happens if I am wrong?
Well, if I am wrong, it wont be the first time. But Im still not going to bash Trump. He is on the short list of other GOP candidates I am not bashing. Im not bashing Rand Paul either. He wont win, but he is right on enough issues that he deserves that respect.
Will Trump win?
I doubt it. And I am looking forward to celebrating the inauguration of President Ted Cruz.
This guy expressed where I stand on this thing completely. I agree with everything he said and feel exactly the same way. I’m still hoping Cruz with get the nomination.
The circular firing squad will continue until the true nature of Cruz and Trump’s relationship is revealed. And neither are talking...
Have these guys addressed Cruz’s definition of amnesty as solely referring to “a pathway to citizenship”, and his support of granting legal status to aliens and his apparent belief that birthright citizenship for illegals is in the constitution?
This myth about the superior conservatism of Cruz is what I find obnoxious. I used to think that myself— but not after I began to look closely. That’s why I’m all in for Trump now.
I’m proud that Trump and Cruz have not taken shots at each other and I don’t think they will. They have a mutual respect for each other and agree on the issues. It is good to see that kind of relationship between two viable candidates.
Pointing out the past positions, inconsistencies, contradictions and own words is not “bashing”
Yes, they work well together. Why their fanbases can’t, I don’t know.
Wow-
This article pretty well sums up my feelings about the matter.
I don’t think Trump or Cruz will get the nomination.
In a nutshell, because the GOPe/RNC not only wants Bush, but doesn’t want Trump or Cruz. For different reasons but it boils down that both DT and TC will throw a significant wrench in the Uniparty’s opertions and put an end to the gravy train they so badly want to keep. It is a mistake to trust them.
The only answer is for one or both to go Independent sooner rather than later. That is a guaranteed win.
If not, the RNC will see to it Jeb gets the nod. REGARDLESS of what the electorate wants.
Well- I thought I might wait for the votes- just for giggles-—I’m old fashion that way. -:)
Cruz is the closest thing to a perfect candidate I’ve seen in decades.
The only place where he is weak is on immigration. The H1b issue, where he wants to multiply the numbers handed out by a factor of something like 5 sticks in my craw.
Immigration is precisely Trump’s strong suit.
I’d like to see Cruz toughen his position on immigration. It makes no sense to bring large numbers of foreign workers into the US when Americans are out of work.
Trump, for his part, can’t manage to distance himself from the butchers at Planned Parenthood; he still wants to fund all the “good” stuff that they purportedly do. And he has no interest in Kim Davis. I hope to hear tomorrow that he has proven me wrong.
Otherwise, I take Trump at his word on trade, immigration, and sovereignty issues which are important. I don’t think he has thought through his position on the middle east, but I think his instincts there are probably right.
So thats where I am. I support Cruz. Trump is good on the issues he cares about but philosophically is all over the map. He is a pragmatic nationalist but he is no conservative. I think he “likes” the constitution but will never read it.
Cruz is the man we need. Trump may be the best we can get.
That is my fear as well. All this arguing and then the fix is already in.
Exactly. It is primary season. No one gets spared criticism -- especially front runners.
Sadly, a dismayingly large number of FReepers disagree.
Personally, I've had enough of the current narcissist/egoist that we've suffered for seven years -- and have no desire to see another.
I could have written that
I am in the middle. I think many people are.
First he is not a conservative.
Yet I think he is basically an honest man.
And I think his cabinet choices could be outstanding, as competence would likely be the criteria not political payback and reward as would be the case with a GOPe president or absolute political loyalty as is the criteria today or would be with Hillary.
