The former Dems that I have known (including my Dad and Step-Dad) didn't just instantaneously fling their previous beliefs aside, it was a bit more gradual than that. Nobody goes from partial birth abortion to building a border fence in 10 minutes!

The problem with your analysis is you’re making the false assumption that when he identified himself as a Democrat, he was a dyed in the wool ideologue. Trump was a casual Democrat. As he has said, he didn’t spend a lot of time thinking about the issues. He was much more focused on his business endeavors. As he’s given these subjects more thought over the years he’s evolved, and mostly in the right direction.
Sadly, none of the other Republicans are saying what we want, instead, they are appealing to what they think is the greater group of people with their words.
Also sadly, not one of the other candidates shows they will be willing to shame and cajole Congress into doing the right thing. “We just need a majority in both houses of Congress.” They get it, then do nothing, saying, “Well, we need the presidency to really do anything.” Even if they get it, they will refuse to move on anything of substance—unless it’s Trump, because Trump and Trump alone will break their backs.
Republicans only talk a good game. Heck, even Cruz wants 500% more legal workers here and voted for the TPA the first round through and then voted for the Corker amendment. Ben wants to legalize all illegals, then give them a pathway to citizenship.
We’re screwed from all sides, but at least I know Trump won’t wimp out against a “do-nothing” Congress and will actually strive to get SOMETHING I want, done. The rest, won’t.
But he is such that I believe he does not want to fail, and really wants to fix things. I trust him more than I trust 90% of the hacks in office now. What the hell to lose when the gop has merged with the dems.
If that were true he would have already joined the "nice" crowd and went all in on amnesty just like your candidate.
And I don't need to know who your candidate is because they ALL support granting legal status to illegals, except maybe Santorum but nobody even knows he's running.
