Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose liberal call to action has propelled his long-shot presidential campaign, is proposing an array of new programs that would amount to the largest peacetime expansion of government in modern American history.
In all, he backs at least $18 trillion in new spending over a decade, according to a tally by The Wall Street Journal, a sum that alarms conservatives and gives even many Democrats pause. Sanders sees the money as going to essential government services at a time of increasing strain on the middle class.
His agenda includes an estimated $15 trillion for a government-run health-care program that covers every American, plus large sums to rebuild roads and bridges, expand Social Security and make tuition free at public colleges.
To pay for it, Sanders, a Vermont independent running for the Democratic nomination, has so far detailed tax increases that could bring in as much as $6.5 trillion over 10 years, according to his staff.

Regarding Senator Bernie Sanders' plan to spend an additional $18,000,000,000,000.00 (WSJ, Page A1, 9/15/2015), the Republican Party Elite absolutely refuses to fund one penny more than $19 Trillion.
To help fend off President Sanders' egregious spending and support Senate Majority Leader McConnell and Speaker Boehner's Common Sense Conservatism, please send your campaign contributions to the National Republican Senatorial Committee!
(And the Uniparty Statists remain unable to grasp the appeal of Trump, Cruz and Carson.)

Spot on. Just like the Socialist Democrats, the GOP would vote for it ... but they’d hold a lot of hearings first.
Shovel ready projects, all..no doubt..
BE careful folks! Don’t dismiss this lunatic. The youth in this country are HEAVILY behind him, and I’m afraid they’re going to show up in droves to vote for him.
More to the point, a President Sanders will be fully supported in his spending by ... Boehner and McConnell.
We must first defeat the RINO / GOPe / Rove / WSJ / Medved / Hewitt caucus. We have to fight our way through our erstwhile allies before we can engage the enemy.
Unless you’re the captain, there’s no obligation to stay aboard a sinking ship. Hell, even the captain isn’t obligated; it’s considered noble.
That said, I’m not sure America’s going to last another 50 years.
I agree. The enthusiasm for Bernie amongst millenials is real, and quite disturbing. For the first time in a century Socialism has an engaged and enthusiastic support base in this country. If nothing else he is pushing the Democrats ten more steps down the path in that direction.
You should see the collective orgasm the youth in Australia are having over their PM’s ouster!
So let the youth get a crystal clear lesson on how socialism doesn’t work without any chance of blaming capitalism.
Those lessons are hidden behind the drapes of corruption. If they all understood how propped up the markets are by promises and hope, they’d realize how bad it really is. Sadly, modern youth want the window dressing but none of the substance.
ping for later
(great post BTW)
18 trillion is such a huge number the average voter can’t wrap his or her mind around it. It may as well be a unicorn.
Keep in mind that government programs ALWAYS cost a lot more than originally projected. A lot more.
Trump: Make America Great Again!
Sanders: Make Government Great Again?
When socialism doesn’t work, they’ll blame the remaining capitalists and vote themselves communism. Once.
We’re just borrowing piece of paper from a private bank that prints the notes when we need it. What can go wrong?
Bernie Sanders promises FREE!
Who could be against it?
Another $18 trillion is chump change.
Let’s not blame him for if we do we are hypocrites.
The GOP wants to buy votes with our money, too.
We’ve established now its not about principle, its merely a question of price.
And not just millenials. Dig into the internals of these polls and, on economic issues at least, a whole lot more of our fellow Americans agree with Bernie than we’d ever want to acknowledge.
I’m convinced that Reaganomics ain’t coming back in MY lifetime.
That deserves repeating.
Santa Claus is hard to beat and especially when the entitlement mentality and "fairness" is cemented into the culture and especially the youth culture through education and the popular culture.
Besides, they haven't seen the ravages and tyrannical side of Marxism or socialism up close or in a historical perspective. As far as they are concerned, "Sweden" is the socialist goal.
For them, "socialism" is something akin to "good" aims like spreading the wealth, increasing fairness and equality, and basking in the cozy glow of eternal social media and connectedness. It no longer has the genuine face of evil and ungodly goals and the stench of oppression and murder.
Besides, Bernie is so avuncular and wise, he looks like their grandfather, and he is "for" them.
“they would hold hearings first”
well of course!-
Need to DIVI up who gets the most money!
