When Ahmed Mohamed went to his high school in Irving, Texas, Monday, he was so excited. A teenager with dreams of becoming an engineer, he wanted to show his teacher the digital clock he'd made from a pencil case.
The 14-year-old's day ended not with praise, but punishment, after the school called police and he was arrested. A photo shows Ahmed, wearing a NASA t-shirt, looking confused and upset as he's being led out of school in handcuffs.
"They arrested me and they told me that I committed the crime of a hoax bomb, a fake bomb," the freshman later explained to WFAA after authorities released him.
Irving Police spokesman Officer James McLellan told the station, "We attempted to question the juvenile about what it was and he would simply only tell us that it was a clock."
The teenager did that because, well, it was a clock, he said.

Outrage over the incident -- with many saying the student was profiled because he's Muslim -- spread on social media as #IStandWithAhmed started trending worldwide on Twitter with more than 100,000 tweets Tuesday morning. The school's Facebook page is roiling with sharp criticism of the way the teen was treated, and the hashtag #engineersforahmed is gaining popularity.
President Barack Obama, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and thousands of others are showing support for Ahmed.
"Cool clock, Ahmed," Obama tweeted. "Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great."
The President would like the teen to join him and other scientists next month for the White House's annual Astronomy Night, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday.

gee wonder why the cops questioned him for a long time an never felt like they were getting straight answers?
That’s why the kid did the perp walk- to tell his story down at the precinct
any kid walked out of a school by the cops for any reason is in cuffs - sop, seen it
any anyone thinks this was an overreaction- how’d you like to find this under your airline or subway seat?
I’m torn, here. I think that such harsh treatment was over-the-top and unnecessary, but it should have still been thoroughly investigated without denigrating the kid.
I DO think that if the parents/family are not native citizens or have any foreign ties to Islamic nations, this investigation should be especially thorough.
Did he actually make a working clock, or did he just remove existing clock innards and put them in a pencil case.
Just a clock...with an alarm...with connectors for a 9v battery.
In other words an event timer to set off juice to the buzzer or for some other purpose.
He seems to have too much circuitry for what it purports to be.
If you don’t recall the achmed who was stopped on the ferry from BC to Seatlle google it. IIRC he had several cheap Casio wristwatches that had been altered. The use of the Casio was adbocated by on of the better islamic bomb makers.
Just sayin’.
“Looks like a future ISIS soldier.”
The kid is wearing a NASA tee-shirt.
Get a grip...
and Oh yeah, on 9-11 the secret service would have been happy to let the kid visit the WH with this in his backpack
Exactly. There’s more to this than the hand-wringers would like to admit.
What is it Homeland Security says?
I’m not torn.
He took it to school, showed everyone, no secret at all.
Grotesque and stupid overreaction by idiots who miss the real threats all around them.
Kid is a decent elec tech at a young age instead of being glued to video games or wasting time bouncing balls around.
And the dimbulb cops and school “administrators” put him in handcuffs?
Yet another reason to forget the government concentration camps they call “schools”.
I’m torn about this too. I can sort of see both sides.
It doesn’t look like there was anyone at the school who was willing or able to “establish that it was just a clock”.
However, if they actually thought it might be dangerous, they would have called a rep from the nearest bomb squad, who could have told them it was just a clock.
Then again, even if it is just a clock, it may be only half of the device. The bomb part might be elsewhere.
Is it really our fault if we are jumpy about muslims carrying such things?
Training to make IED’s at a later date.
The blame for the paranoia I think can be morally assigned about 2% to those arresting the innocent kid, and 98% to the false prophet Mohammed and those that continue to carry out atrocities following his barbaric example and teachings.
And therein lies the big mistake by the school and police department...once they figured out it really was a clock, the cops still arrested the kid for making a "hoax bomb" instead of just backing away and telling him good job.
We should make 1000 of these and send them to the White House. Label them “Science Project Clocks for Obama & Hillary” since that’s what they seem to believe they are.
Further proof of taqiya. As servants of satan, muzzies are well-equipped with cunning and posing as if they were regular people.
Recall that the 9/11 terrorist who lived in Florida were perceived by their landlord as the ideal tenants, quiet and bothering nobody. They possess the skill of lying low and patiently waiting to strike. A few of those terrorists joined a Florida health club and were well liked because they seemed so well-mannered and ordinary. And this muzzie yute fits a similar profile, wide-eyed, pleasantly nerdy and seemingly innocent. The islamic enemy has perfected their craft.
I’d have a great attitude because of the windfall headed my way.
This is interesting
“Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House?” Obama said. “We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”
“Ahmed, if you ever want to come by Facebook, I’d love to meet you,” Zuckerberg wrote.
The lanky teen even received job leads — for when he’s of age. MIT astrophysicist Chanda Prescod-Weinstein and NASA engineer Bobak Ferdowski told him to give them a call in a few years.
My take: This is the result of schools’ fear of lawsuits, Feds’ influence on LEOs and a dramatic drop in IQs the past quarter century....
A return to local school control, local policing (and not being on the Federal teat) and common sense are in order. I’ll be returned to dust long before it happens...
Why a clock?
With all due respect, it looks EXACTLY like an IED.
Glad they arrested the little sh*t. Hope they look at his phone and computer too.
