In 2003, there was HUGE support for Bush and Operation Iraqi Freedom here at FR.
In fact, there was HUGE support here at FR for THE SURGE as well.
My, how things have changed after a decade...
I think we sadly have discovered the reason for/purpose of brutal Middle Eastern dictators, as unsavory as they are.
At the time, Saddam appeared to be a loose cannon that could not be allowed to flourish in a post-9/11 world. However, Bush apparently had no plan for the post-Saddam Iraq. "Let democracy taker its course" was not the way to go over there. If the removal of Saddam was done to make the world safer, it failed. Then to make matters worse, Obama and Hillary followed the same course in Libya.
I guess we at FR assumed Bush/Cheney et al knew what they were doing.
Momentous events always look different when given time. I was hugely in support of the war. I truly believed that if Saddam didn't have a nuke he was working on one and the he had chemical weapons (he did) and that given a chance he'd supply them to terrorists.
I now believe that overthrowing Saddam was a huge mistake. The vaccuum his absence created has created chaos. even before barry obama screwed things up royally. The old sectarian strifes came to the surface and islam proved again to be the bloody chaos it's always been.
I supported the Surge because it was obvious that what we were doing wasn't working but since we were there we needed to win. I still support the idea. Who knew that obama would be so reckless and just throw away everything we achieved?
Its called Hindsight. It was a huge strategic blunder.
Problem is that the Bush Administration lost its nerve after toppling Sadaam, and instead of right wheeling into Iran and turning the Israelis loose on the Syrians, Bush, Condi, and Rumsfeld decided to hunker down and fight the guerrilla/hearts and minds war, making the exact same mistakes that were made in Vietnam, before Bush finally pulled it out with the Surge (the victory in which Obama then chucked away).
Barack made no effort to keep forces in Iraq, was all to happy to withdraw completely. ...that was Bush's war after all.
Later, much later, he sends material support which is quickly captured or simply turned over to ISIS.
“My, how things have changed after a decade...”
A decade of unrelieved uniparty chicanery and palpable, undeniable decline at home and abroad. The curtain fell, and we learned the wizard is just a little huckster.
It was a huge blunder, done only to avenge his stupid father, but we get behind our military, so of course we supported it once done.

The Surge came FAR too late, and put Pelosi in power and lay the groundwork for Obama's ascension. Bush was a complete disaster.

Well, we can't be wrong forever.
"Saddam Hussein throws a little gas, everyone goes crazy, 'oh he's using gas!'" Trump said.
I remember when John Kerry was the "traitor" for not supporting the Iraq war in 2004. Imagine if any Freeper had come up with Trump's Code Pink position then - Jim Robinson would probably have banned the user.
