Thomas Jefferson’s response to Muslims in 1801 is more important today than ever. America’s first war with Islamic terrorists should be remembered.

From Wikipedia:

The First Barbary War (1801–1805) also known as the Tripolitan War or the Barbary Coast War, was the first of two wars fought between the United States and the Northwest African Berber Muslim states known collectively as the Barbary States. These were the Ottoman provinces of Tripoli, Algiers, and Tunis, which were enjoying a large autonomy, as well as the independent Sultanate of Morocco. The war was fought because U.S. President Thomas Jefferson refused to pay the high tributes demanded by the Barbary states and because they were seizing American merchant ships and enslaving the crews for high ransoms. It was the first declared war the United States fought on foreign land and seas.

From Downtrend:

In 1786, Jefferson and John Adams met with Tripoli’s ambassador to Great Britain. They asked this ‘diplomat’ by what right his nation attacked American ships and enslaved her citizens and why the Muslims held such hostility toward this new nation, with which neither Tripoli nor any of the other Barbary Coast nations had any previous contact. The answer was quite revealing. Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja (the ambassador) replied that Islam:

“Was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Qur’an, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.”

That is indeed quite revealing. Yet, America continued paying ransoms to these terrorists for the next fifteen years or so. Until Jefferson became President. Then, the Pasha (leader) of Tripoli sent a demand to the new leader for an immediate payment of $225,000 and $25,000 per year on an ongoing basis. Jefferson flatly refused, leading the Pasha to cut down the flagpole of the American consulate and declaring war on the United States. The rest of the terrorist states followed suit.

Jefferson had formerly been against raising a navy, but this soon changed as he was determined to meet force with force. A squadron of vessels was sent to the area and Congress authorized Jefferson to have the US ships seize all vessels and goods that belonged to the Pasha and anything else deemed necessary. As they saw the US was actually committed to the fight, Algiers and Tunis quickly abandoned the war and allegiance to Tripoli. Obviously, the US won the war. In fact, this was the reason why the line “to the shores of Tripoli” was added to the Marine Corps hymn.

Typical of bullies.

Lindsey Graham’s great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather screamed that Jefferson was acting recklessly and we needed to understand the Muslims.

Jefferson had formerly been against raising a navy,...

History shows otherwise. This was always a bad rap on Jefferson.

The Constitution Article 1 Sec. 8 - Congress shall have the power to..provide and maintain a navy.

Raising and supporting standing armies is restricted, of which Jefferson agreed.
Which, I wonder, how we get around that restriction today ?

If its possible, one has to respect those first Marines even more than those who came after them

Think about it - your nation is young, and weak. Your President, who before wanted nothing to do with North Africa, now says you should go and attack these nutcase Muslims, whom you probably have never heard of before. Oh, and it will be the first time the US Navy sails abroad - and there won’t be any back-up or rescue if the attack fails.

Wise men and leaders like Winston Churchill only appear once every 1000 years or so.

So true. By the time those guys got to North Africa, they might as well have been on the far side of the moon. And their opponents were literally out of the dark ages.

“to the shores of Tripoli” was added to the Marine Corps hymn.

The Marines are also referred to as “Leather Necks” for the same reason. They wore leather collars around their necks to keep the musselman from cutting off their heads in battle.

In conjunction with what you wrote.

Part of one of the treaties with them claims we are not a Christian nation. This is left over from the crusades in which the Christian nations were their enemies.

We needed time to build the Navy.

Those who claim we were not founded as a Christian nation, use that treaty. without putting it in context.

“...there is this fearless fatalistic apathy.”

It seems hundreds of millions in the civilized west possess this attribute, as if responding and acting accordingly to the threat posed by the Moslems would cause them to lose the classification of being civilized is more important than suffering the ravages brought upon them by the ‘votaries’ of Islam. If Mohammedanism is, as Chuchill stated, “...as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog,...” not only would it be a humane response, but a civilized response as well, to end the existence of the threat to civilized society. The primary goal of our government is the continuation of those who support it by providing a level of security for which they themselves cannot provide. Recognizing and dealing with threats against the society which maintains it demands of government that those threatening its population be controlled by any means necessary to ensure our survival.

Of course Mohammedanism is not the only threat to the our existence. Socialism, Marxism, Communism and Fascism rank on par with it as well as any other political ‘isms you might care to mention. The classic pose of the Minuteman with weapon held at low port offers the vision which should be presented to any threat. At times concealed carry just doesn’t effectively present the concept of determined resistance. But I digress.

Sadly, Churchill’s writings were the result of the influences brought upon him by racist white privilege. /S

http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/naval/p/sdecatur.htm

On December 23, 1803, Enterprise and the frigate USS Constitution captured the Tripolitan ketch Mastico after a sharp fight. Renamed Intrepid, the ketch was given to Decatur for use in a daring raid to destroy the frigate USS Philadelphia which had run aground and been captured in Tripoli harbor in October. At 7:00 PM on February 16, 1804, Intrepid, disguised as a Maltese merchant ship and flying British colors, entered Tripoli harbor.

Claiming that they had lost their anchors in a storm, Decatur asked permission to tie up alongside the captured frigate.

As the two ships touched, Decatur stormed aboard Philadelphia with sixty men. Fighting with swords and pikes, they took control of the ship and began preparations to burn it. With combustibles in place, Philadelphia was set on fire. Waiting until he was sure the fire had taken hold, Decatur was the last to leave the burning ship. Escaping the scene in Intrepid, Decatur and his men successfully evaded fire from the harbor’s defenses and reached the open sea. When he heard of Decatur’s achievement, Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson called it “the most bold and daring act of the age.”
