Russian Frigate Admiral Gorshkov Goes to White Sea for Final Trials

MOSCOW --- The Project 22350 lead frigate Admiral Gorshkov has gone to the White Sea to complete state trials of its weapons and equipment, Northern Fleet spokesman Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga said late on Monday.

"Apart from the ship’s crew, representatives of industrial enterprises are also on board the frigate to observe the trials. The ship completed its passage from Baltiysk to Severodvinsk on September 30 and temporarily joined the Northern Fleet’s Belomorsk naval base forces. During its passage, the frigate’s navigation systems, communications equipment and radars were checked," Serga said.

The final stages of the state trials will be crucial for the fleet to decide on accepting the ship for operation, Serga added.

The frigate Admiral Gorshkov underwent shipbuilders’ trials in the Baltic Sea where it conducted artillery and missile live firing exercises successfully and practiced fighting submarines in cooperation with the Baltic Fleet’s air arm.

The Project 22350 lead frigate Admiral Gorshkov was laid down in 2006 and put afloat in 2010. The frigate is designed to fight surface warships and submarines in the ocean and at sea and repel air attacks both independently and within a formation.

The Project 22350 frigate is flush-decked and has three-island superstructures, a tower mast and a steel tube. The ship has a lower radar signature, which makes it virtually invisible for the enemy’s radars.

The Project 22350 frigate has a displacement of 4,550 tons and a length of 135 meters. The capacity of its diesel-gas-turbine power plant is 65,000 hp. The ship is armed with the new A-192 130mm artillery gun and anti-ship, antisubmarine and air defense missile systems. The ship is capable of carrying the Kamov Ka-27 (NATO reporting name: Helix) helicopter or its version.

What is the point of battleships in the age of the cruise missile. Feel like we could sink this thing by remote control from Tampa at the push of a button, right?

“The ship has a lower radar signature, which makes it virtually invisible for the enemy’s radars.” - No.

Russia should name their next capital ship the “Barack Hussein Obama”.

After all -

No one has done more than Obama to advance Russian hegemony in the post-Cold War world.

There is a counter weapon for everything. That does not mean you don't build it. You just build it to defend itself. Warships have defenses against cruise missiles, they are layered and effective. Tanks have reactive armor against anti-tank weapons. Fighter planes have flares and jammers to defend against AA missiles. Even submarines have decoys to defend against torpedoes.

Ivan used to have all armaments on deck. They’re in the 21st century now.

Even the older Kirov class battle cruisers have VLS for most of their primary weapons.

What was the quote attributed to Marshal Zhukov? “The first thing Russia does when it goes to war is sink it’s navy.” Or something like that.

White Sea? That’s not a lot of room to run. That’s up around Archangel, right?

Admiral Gorshkov was the Soviet era naval commander who oversaw the expansion of their fleet to challenge the Western powers, during the Brezhnev dictatorship. He never won any big naval battles. Russia historically saw its naval arm as secondary to its land and air forces, whether under the Tsars or under the Communists, except during the 1970s. In the last century, only Japan and Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany ever offered a serious challenge to British and American naval power until the Soviets tried in the 1970s. The heavy expense of this challenge was one of the factors behind the Soviet collapse in the late 1980s.

No doubt the name of the ship is reflective of Putin's ambitions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

I don't think she would fight well. There's a Russian naval saying: 'a ship sails as you have named her'. Name a ship "Disaster" she'll sail like one.

Then she (the ship named Barack Obama) would probably end up with another ship ramming her in the stern.

These are going to be their most effective frigates. To date they are commissioning one (which has taken them almost rs). A second has been launched.

See my flickr album about these vessels.

Admiral Gorshkov FFG Class

The problem the Russians have is the ability to actually build these (and other vessels) in a timely manner.

The US will be putting out two very capable Arleigh Burke destroyers each year, and will be doing so, moving into the Flight III vessels for the next ten years.
