A county police chief on Long Island, New York, resigned on Tuesday amid an ongoing federal probe into whether he beat a suspect accused of stealing a duffel bag from his car in 2012.
James Burke, the chief of Suffolk County, one of the states largest by population, stepped down on Tuesday after a 31-year career, his attorney confirmed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the beating allegations, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Stepped down, or is taking full retirement?
“The way I see it, everybody takes a beating sometime.”
...and some people could use a beating sometime.
Is Newburgh in Suffolk County?
It’s a terrible thing, stealing a man’s duffel bag.
It leaves him with nowhere to store his duffel.
Looks to be another “LEO” with skeletons in his closet. Not to worry though, he will get his retirement and probably escape prosecution for his crimes. LEOs really do need to clean up their own house. They need to abide by the laws they enforce on the rest of us.
Nope.
The article says Suffolk County is on Long Island.
Last time I was there Newburgh was just up the Hudson from West Point. Newburgh in Orange County.
No; it’s in Orange County, upstate, and on the Hudson River.
I’ve had some allegations for years but I never ever beat any of them. Really. I promise.
How do we judge this without knowing the skin color of those involved?
Shouldn't that be "Sheriff"?
