Paul Ryan on Thursday takes the gavel as Speaker of the House, promising a fresh start for the fractious GOP Congress. We know the Wisconsinite has the principles and skills to succeed, but his speakership will be as much a test of the conservative movement as it is of Mr. Ryan. The question is whether conservatives can muster the unity and wit to revive Congress as a governing body.
Mr. Ryan is promising to communicate better with the likes of the Freedom Caucus, to cut fewer backroom deals, and to advance an agenda that offers a clearer sense of conservative principles. This all sounds good, especially the last point. That would mean, say, trying to pass a plan to replace ObamaCare, not merely repeal it. Or pushing specific tax cuts or social-welfare reforms that could front-run major reform in 2017.
But recall that John Boehner also promised regular order when he took the gavel in 2011 and again in 2015. He pressed entitlement reforms and told his committee chairmen to develop reform legislation. Mr. Boehner accomplished more than he gets credit for given President Obamaâs implacable opposition, but he had to spend most of his time responding in crisis fashion to deadlines on debt limits, budgets, tax-cut expirations and trust funds running out of money. With this weekâs budget deal, much of this underbrush has been cleared away through 2017.

Obama's full budget was passed by all House Democrats, supported by just enough of the Republican "Leadership" including Ryan and Boehner, with the approval of Paul Gigot's Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, and in spite of the opposition of the vast majority of the Republican caucus and every conservative of note.
Nobody has credibly claimed that conservatism won anything, so this is not compromise. Republican "Leadership" did not complain that they were forced, so this is not even capitulation.
The masks are off at the Halloween Ball, and approving all of Obama's budget demonstrates that Obama, Boehner, Ryan and Gigot are all leaders of the pro-government liberal Uniparty.
The WSJ stopped being a credible voice for conservatives years ago.
They now have more in common with the Washington Post.
“We know the Wisconsinite has the principles and skills to succeed, but his speakership will be as much a test of the conservative movement as it is of Mr. Ryan.”
Summary:
Having just passed 100% of 0bama’s budget, Ryan proved he’s a great guy.
Now if only those pesky conservatives would get out of the way of we brilliant leaders of the leftist Uniparty ....
- Paul Gigot, WSJ Editorial Page Editor
Personalize it. Freeze it.
PAUL GIGOT.
He’s the leftist problem.
I agree, and I believe that this issue with the WSJ and the fact that sons have taken over running FOX, has caused the sudden extreme left shift.
However, they did show the outstanding comment by Ted Cruz this morning (several times), and that is a complete switch for them. Recently, they have refused to even mention his name, even when he received a 3rd place standing in the polls.
The morning crew seems to remain level; but I’m concerned with what’s happening to the weekend crew .. since they continue to have the ultra-liberal female still onboard. I rarely, if ever, watch them during the day - unless there is some commanding event taking place.
Many people still consider FOX to be conservative .. but I don’t see it that way anymore. They can do what they want, but I know they have lost a lot of viewers .. so maybe it’s time to get back to where they were .. being “fair and balanced” most of the time .. instead of in the tank for Jeb Bush.
I give Ryan less than a year before the Conservative base has his head on a platter
He is pro Amnesty
As budget chairman the budget is up 4 trillion dollars
And Ryan is for banning AR type weapons which are hunting favorites.
He didn’t want the job and we didn’t want his sorry butt that could not even beat Uncle Joe Biden in the debate.
Sorry, but Ryan’s vote for the deal showed us exactly where he plans to take us. There will be more deals from him with McConnell to shore up Obama and let him have a legacy. The destruction of America.
The best way to describe this is the “Uni-party”.
The fusion of Business/media/political interests in DC is now complete. The supposed divide between GOP/Dem is just a convent myth to keep the masses mindlessly cheering for “their team” while the Establishment pigs lining up at the tax money trough.
All the supposed fights between the GOP and the Dems in DC are about is which pig gets which seat at the trough.
Anyone taking bets on how long Ryan lasts?
Yeah, I’m very unhappy with Ryan. At first, I thought he would be okay .. but then I got more info here on FR, and I was really sorry he got selected.
We know he worked with Boehner to get the budget passed, before he took office as Speaker .. so as not to TAINT him.
Actually, his collusion with Boehner had already tainted him.
the entire US government is one big massive back room deal
Well, I’m not holding my breath.
“the entire US government is one big massive back room deal”
Hold your cards, we have a BINGO!
Boehner Jr.
