The Perils of Obama's Latest Undeclared War
TheAtlantic ^ | November 2, 2015 | CONOR FRIEDERSDORF

As America’s intervention against ISIS in Iraq and Syria intensifies, its present course lacks popular support or constitutional legitimacy.

Without Congressional permission, or any attempt to rally the public’s support, Obama has ordered U.S. ground troops to a war zone, his most flagrantly unconstitutional war-making since he unlawfully helped to overthrow Muammar al-Qaddafi.

“The United States is set to deploy troops on the ground in Syria for the first time to advise and assist rebel forces combating ISIS,” CNN reports. “The deployment of U.S. Special Operations forces is the most significant escalation of the American military campaign against ISIS to date.”

This should perturb even proponents of a U.S. war against ISIS.

As Obama put it prior to the 2008 election: “The president does not have the power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.”

Now he is engaging in the very actions that he specifically declared to be illegal. And Congress is abdicating its responsibility to either empower him to wage war or to rein him in. Its passivity is enabling Obama to exceed the limits of his power in a way that has, in the past, led to failed wars as catastrophic as Vietnam and as recent as Libya.

Obama’s course “marks a decisive break in the American constitutional tradition,” Yale Law’s Bruce Ackerman argued long before any ground troops were deployed.

And beyond its illegality, it makes U.S. foreign policy less effective.

As law professor Ilya Somin explains in the Washington Post, “One of the main justifications for the Constitution’s requirement that presidents can only initiate a war if they have congressional authorization is to assure that any such war is backed by a large political consensus. ”

Well, maybe had these violators of their duties taking their responsibilities as they've been empowered to, those that have been criminally guilty of violating their oath of office would very well not be getting members of the press all bent out of shape because of what they've taken to notice about the way he runs the presidency.

I've got to conclude that journalists are the most incredibly clueless morons the world has ever known. It's like they've just finally had their heads pulled out of their collective orifi (orifices) after nearly seven years and are observing the latest world developments specifically Obama's military moves in the Middle East with consternation and concern.

His sending troops to a war zone as the most flagrantly unconstitutional war making since he unlawfully helped to overthrow Qadafi.

Wow. That's really big news because he's never as much as deviated to the slightest infinitesimal degree regarding his adherence to the laws and principles of the Republic as delineated in the Constitution of the United States.

Now, after all these years of wanton, deliberate. Malicious trampling, strangling of the Constitution without as much as a single word from the ever vigilant Fourth Estate, they're getting all legal and technical about the president and his seeming disregard for the Constitution and not a little bit alarmed by it.

And now after all these years of doing as he pleases without the slightest word of opposition, he can finally put into place his ultimate act of bringing hell and havoc to the the country he despises,is so contemptuous of.

So, when they aren’t busy slaughtering Christians, our proxies are fighting Russia’s proxies.

We arm them, train them, fund them, and send special forces to help organize them, but we don’t have any influence over them to get them to quit killing Christians.

You can see why Obama doesn’t dare ask permission to do what he is doing. What I can’t figure is why no one dares to call him on it.

Probably because there’s bipartisan support for oppressing Eastern Orthodox Christians, and has been since Clinton’s Balkan adventures. McCain is virulently pravoslavniphobic.

Even Ted Cruz (and this is one of the reasons my suppport for him is only with reservations) is clueless about the state of Christians in the Middle East — big gaffe telling a group of Middle Eastern Christians (who are almost all Ba’athists) that “Israel is the best friend Christians have in the Middle East.” Actually, indigenous Christian populations are treated better by the governments of both Lebanon and Syria than Christians are in Israel, as are Christian guest-workers in Qatar, and that applied when Cruz made his remarks.

So, is he going to stop at “advising” the rebels in fighting ISIS? Or is this a back-door route to deposing Assad?

If the former, then one could make the case that this action is to answer a threat to the US.

If the latter, we’re the belligerent party, and that requires Congressional Declaration of War.

Or Impeachment and Removal.

Hope it doesn’t get you banned.

Thanks for posting the unpleasant truth!

The Atlantic Magazine is criticizing the Metrosexual with the well-creased pants (see, I can be polite when talking about the pResident) in the White House? Color me shocked...

These 50 trainers, advisers, combat air controllers—or whatever they are—require a support infrastructure for transportation, communications, medical, resupply etc. This support force would be 10 times larger than the 50 or about 500. Since the Pentagon says 50 and not 550 then the support infrastructure must already exist in Iraq.

The White House obsession with denying the extent of U.S. ground operations in Iraq and Syria and its tortured parsing of official terminology is Kafkaesque. Obama is the laughing stock of the world.

“Key word: escalation.”

More words but not from the article: 50 highly trained men with targets on their backs as soon as they get there. Thousands of fighters against them and 50 of them. I fear they will all be dead soon.

How Obama Shrank the Military

God bless our military, who also just took a 20% cut to their retirement, while ObamaCare is exempt from cuts, felons can now apply for Federal jobs, and 90% of illegal invaders are on Food Stamps.

I fear they will all be dead soon.

All they need is one butchered and dragged through the streets and the war mongers will get what they want. But it won't be their offspring in harm's way.
