San Salvador (AFP) - Wearing a particular brand of sneakers or a certain haircut can be a fatal style decision in Guatemala, El Salvador or Honduras -- three Central American nations struggling with a vicious gang pandemic.
Looks that would be ordinary elsewhere have been appropriated by the criminal gangs as their signs on the streets, where armed turf battles have made these countries some of the deadliest places in the world, outside of actual war zones.
That means the 6.5 million youths aged 15-24 living in the so-called Northern Triangle formed by the three nations have to think twice about everyday apparel lest they be mistaken for enemy targets or usurpers by gang members, or even suspected criminals by the police.
"It's crazy. You can't wear this or that brand of sneakers because they are part of the style adopted by the gangs," said Mauricio Cornejo, 18, as he walked along a San Salvador street contested by two fearsome gangs, the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18.

And we want these drug cartel 3rd worlders here? I know a mexican american dude at work and he hates the illegals from mexico, el salvador, etc. He told me all they are is trouble. He said its more dangerous than Iraq there, he was in the US Army. I believe him. Build the damned wall.
It’s all well and good to feel sorry for those caught in the crossfire of a corrupt criminal culture. The problems begin when feeling sorry turns into a push to open the border to them - which usually means not only welcoming in the innocent bystanders, but the perps.
Already happening here...
just like the Mid-East, where not wearing a proper head-scarf will get you killed by “gangs” there as well.

It would be a heckuva lot cheaper and easier to just clean them out there.

Between 2008-2012, many Mexican cities had higher per-capita murder rates than Baghdad or Mogadishu. Why anyone, at least anyone claiming to be a conservative, would want to import millions of people from a culture with a murder rate like Somalia's and a literacy rate like Egypt's is a great mystery to me.
We're already headed in that direction. If you go to border regions or east LA, you're already more than halfway there.
Disgusting, but doesn’t surprise me any more. I remember a similar story where some deaf guy was shot because a feral pack of cholos mistook sign language for rival gang signs.
Any tendency for dysfunctional subcultures to self destruct should be welcomed.
Or at the very least, we should have the sense not to import dysfunctional peoples and cultures by the millions into the US or any other developed countries.
Stories like this should be required reading for supporters of the Jeb and Rubio worldview, i.e. “conservatives” who are convinced that “traditional, family-oriented” immigrants from Mexico and Central America will usher in some kind of conservative renaissance in America. In reality, this is what they will bring.
They already are.
