Will Airport Security Accept Your Driver’s License?
The New York Times ^ | 05 Nov 2015 | Rachel Lee Harris

Posted on 11/08/2015 8:02:04 AM PST by Theoria

Come 2016, your state driver’s license may not be enough to get you on a commercial flight.

On Oct. 10, the Department of Homeland Security began enforcing the last phase of the Real ID Act, which establishes minimum security standards for states and United States territories when issuing identification, primarily driver’s licenses; and prohibits certain government facilities and — most relevant to travelers — the Transportation Security Administration from accepting them as proof of identification if they were issued by a noncompliant state.

But don’t fret just yet. Initially, enforcement is limited to those entering federal and military facilities and nuclear power plants. D.H.S. plans to announce a schedule of changes to travel requirements by the end of 2015, and none will be enforced without at least 120 days’ notice to state officials and the public, the agency said.

Many states, including New York, have already been granted an extension through Oct. 10, 2016, in order to reach compliance. Several others are in the process of applying for renewals of extensions that currently stave off enforcement through Jan. 10, 2016. Those that can prove they are actively working toward compliance are likely to be granted more time, the agency said.

Only two, American Samoa and Minnesota, have yet to make an effort to comply with the new standards or apply for an extension.

The Act, which passed in 2005 and has been implemented in phases since 2013, calls for a minimum set of standards when issuing licenses, including, but not limited to, verification of a person’s date of birth, social security account (or ineligibility for the program), residence and citizenship status, among other requirements and procedures.

Didn’t the Soviet Union require its subjects to carry a passport with them while traveling within the country? That’s exactly where we are headed.

How bout this. We start by disallowing anybody wearing a turban or burqa.

If they don’t like it. They don’t have to fly on our airlines.

Funny, I don't have a drivers license. All I have is my military ID.

Will they accept/honor that?

With CA and other lefty states issuing drivers’ licenses to illegals. . .I can see where certain state DLs would not be accepted.

I use my CCW in Texas as ID, just to piss off the bank. The bank initially refused to accept and said it required a DL, and I said the CCW has all the DL info on it, too include the picture, and they still refused until I got a hold of the VP and he set them straight.

Weeks later, did it again and again was challenged by some smarmy lefty anti-CCW employee and I challenged her to show me the law and bank policy. She confidently strutted back to her computer and took a few minutes to look it up and, yes, a CCW is accepted.

She was contrite. . .at least she admitted she was wrong.

For her entire tenure as Governor of New Mexico, Suzanna Martinez has tried to get rid of driver’s licences for illegals every legislative session, but is continually thwarted by a cabal of state politicians welded firmly to the illegal alien teet. Next year January, NM DL’s won’t be honored as valid ID for entering federal facilities or for airline flights.

When my husband and I went to St. Petersburg in 2008, we had to have a wheelchair for my dear hubby. And so he was able to use one. I pushed it.

The curious thing was that our woman TOUR GUIDE had to surrender HER PASSPORT for security to MAKE SURE that the wheelchair would be returned. They care NOTHING about ours.

The USSR and "mother Russia don't seem TOO FAR removed from each other. Just an observation.

” The Act, which passed in 2005 and has been implemented in phases since 2013,”

Yeah, isn’t this “special.” We supposedly have a critical situation with terrorism, but we’ve taken EIGHT YEARS thus far addressing the acceptability of driver’s licenses as ID at our airports. My bet is that the whole concept of the TSA has already gone the way of the Dodo Bird. Like the War on Drugs, etc., the TSA is, and has probably always been, just another government-sponsored welfare program.

Why do people wanting to fly put up with this, especially conservatives? The USSC says voter ID is unconstitutional and we just blithely go along. To travel though, you must have the approved ID. The citizens franchise is a fair and open electoral system, it matters so little to the PTB that they openly declare all people 18+ in the country should vote. Then they turn around and tell us “only whites and the wealthy can travel” because minorities and the disabled can’t afford or crawl to a DMV. (sarcasm intended)

We have to know the reason the country is in such a sorry state is that WE won’t lift a finger to defend it. We will send our very best to defend the interests of the govt/corporations, but tending to the business of keeping our Republic.....NAH......The game of the week is on....

We’re not being required to have a passport. You only need it if: a - you’re flying AND b - the state you live in is too pathetically lazy to modify their driver’s licenses to fit standards that were put in place over a decade ago.

I was stopped by Border Patrol years ago just outside El Paso. I had NOT been across the border. It was one of those check points they set up on this side. They would accept nothing other than a passport. Even my military dependents ID was unacceptable.

A direct assault on the InterState Commerce Clause.

Verr are your papers , Citizen ?

Remember when the Social Security Act was passed , and that it was illegal to use your Social Security number as an IDENTITY ?
Tell that to your local Cedit Bureau !

You may be right, but what about more modern ways to identify people, such as thumbprints or retina scans? Seems that there are other choices vs passports and more ‘papers’.
