A former firefighter whose face was so horrifically burnt while tackling a blaze that he 'scared his own children' has been given a brand new one in the most extensive transplant ever performed.
Pat Hardison now wears the face of David Rodebaugh - a 26-year-old who died in August following a cycling accident.
The procedure - which was the riskiest face transplant carried out to date - has left Hardison feeling normal again and it should restore his impaired sight, too.
The Tennessee man was told he had only a 50 per cent chance of surviving the surgery but it was a risk he was willing to take.

A good day for a feel good story. Photographic documentation well worth looking at.
God bless him!
Amazing health technology we have!
Hopefully many veterans will get to benefit from it.
IMMEDIATELY
AWESOME!
THANK YOU DONOR DON RODEBAUGH - YOU ARE A HERO, TOO!
Wow, remarkable what they did. That guy lived through a hellish life of pain and surgeries for about 15 years and is finally coming into a time when he can be seen as the man he is, not a “monster” (which he wad not, I’m just saying he expressed that this is how people, children in particular, viewed him). Glad for him, amazing that they could do such a thing. It’s interesting that the face he has doesn’t really resemble either that of the “donor” or his old one. And so he is reborn, a new man with a new face and he can resume his life. Good for him!

Wow.
I often wonder what it is like for a burn victim with facial burns the first time he looks in the mirror. I know it is traumatic, but I can never know how traumatic.
A double blow. First self image then being ostracized.
People can be cruel. From those who pretend the strange looking person is not in the room, to those who are verbally abusive.
This surgery is a miracle.
Amazing. God bless him.
Hopefully many veterans will have no need of it.
What a selfless decision his Mom made!
I am sure it was not easy.
Gives me a sense of perspective. My “problems”, as they are, don’t even move the needle compared to what this man has gone through in his life He had surgeries more often that I got a haircut...
That is simply stunning.
Life is Eternal
Love is Immortal
Death is only the Horizon
- nobody important, just a great quote.
I agree its a cruel world, but at least we have the option of trying to make it better, unlike the rest of parts of the planet.
We have to be honest, its not easy to see it in person, you feel so ashamed of your own meager pains, you feel like its unfair not to them but to ones self of being still visually acceptable in social circles publicly.
But the joy to even know what was sci fi in our youth and i’m 57, is now a reality. Facial transplants, 3 d organ printing, even tooth regeneration. Its amazing.
OMG! What a horrible thing to go through. He lost everything, first his face then his wife and house. Tragic story.
Did a search. Oh well.
Besides, I put it in news because I consider it news.
Meant to add ‘sorry’ in my reply.
No worries. At least this way it might get a bit more views.
Actually simply trying to reduce the bandwidth for FR, since it seems to be increasing more and more each year -and therefore costing us more.
A bit less double-posting (and in some cases triple-, quadruple- and more- posting) would help in that regard I would think.
Appreciate the ‘sorry’, as well. I make certain to include it too whenever I muck up a bit. :)
Cheers!
And another worthwhile story from the british paper.
Never in a US rag.
