Russia has deployed its fleet of strategic bombers to double the volume of airstrikes on Islamist targets in Syria, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has announced. Vladimir Putin has ordered a cruiser to coordinate operations with French naval forces in the Mediterranean.

"We are conducting a mass airstrike campaign against Islamic State targets in Syria. We have now doubled the number of sorties, which is allowing us to conduct operations throughout the length and breadth of the country," Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said during a Security Council meeting in Moscow chaired by the Russian president.

Shoigu said that Russia's Tu-95, Tu-22 and Tu-160 strategic bombers have been brought into the operation, while the Air Force command added that the strike group has been bolstered with 37 new planes, including Su-34 bombers and Su-27 fighter jets.

The head of the General Staff reported that the new phase of the anti-ISIS campaign will involve 25 long-range bombers flying out of airfields in Russia.

He is putting us to shame. Oh well. This is how you fight those monsters when you mean to really win.

Putin is showing the world what a leader looks like making Obama look like a whiny child.

Which airspace did they fly through without asking permission, giving notification, or paying tribute?

Thought I would just expand your reply a little.

France has already backtracked and said today they were still going to bring in immigrants. Terrorists will merely move their HQ out of Syria and into France.

LOL. Yeah, riiiight. We ended up with the leaflet dropping doofus because so many Americans wanted him to rob their neighbors and give them so-called “free” stuff. What else matters? Let’s hope we don’t get a repeat.

I feel bad for France citizens. Like us, they appear to have a doofus for a leader.

“Which airspace did they fly through without asking permission, giving notification, or paying tribute?”

Reportedly, they came over Iranian and Iraqi airspace.

Turkey is the big dog in the neighborhood, who could shoot down a high flying bomber.

It looks to me like the Turks and Americans have written off the rebel groups in the NW of Syria, leaving an open season on them for the Russians, who are ramping up their efforts against them.

I was excited yesterday when there were reports of heavy bombers coming in, attacking Raqaa - that would be a game changer. Now I think that was just a cover story to sell that escalation to the Western public, while they were angry over ISIS in Paris. The cruise missiles they fired from the bombers were mostly in Idlib and Aleppo, with a token amount at Raqaa.

My guess is Iran and Iraq. I read a while back Iraq gave them permission to fly over their territory to bomb ISIS, and clearly Iran is on board.

You could fly (out of Odessa,it is said)to a waypoint in south eastern Black Sea and launch Cruse Missiles.. it would be about 370-375 miles over very sparsely populated Turkey to Raqqah.

should be in the range of the ALCMs

Putin, “we are flying over your territory”
Reply, “uh, ok, you have our permission.
Putin, “do you understand the difference between a question and a statements?”

The French are moving their navy into place right now. It looks to be for the long term. Russia is offering support.

Iraq is now an ally of Iran. Both are fighting ISIS. Why wouldn’t they want Russia’s help?

The point is the Russians do not ask for permission.

Seems to me the Russians are the only ones asking permission of the government there.
