Johnny Manziel Demoted to Third String After Partying Video Surfaces

Johnny Manziel lost his starting spot after cameras caught the quarterback partying during his bye week.

Browns coach Mike Pettine called the behavior, which comes after an offseason trip to rehab, “disappointing” and “frustrating.”

Manziel’s bye-week carousing spoils his national coming-out party previously scheduled for Monday night’s game against the banged-up Baltimore Ravens. Pettine announced on Tuesday Josh McCown will start the game at quarterback.

TMZ spotted Manziel on Thursday at the RIO Rooftop & Restaurant nightclub in Austin, where he partied the evening away with friends. The Summit Rooftop Lounge, where he spent the evening boozing on champagne, served as Friday’s spot.

Two Sundays ago Manziel threw 33 completions for 342 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Steelers. After TMZ videos surfaced showing the Heisman Trophy-winner drinking, dancing, and carrying on, the Browns reevaluated Monday night’s game plan. ESPN reported earlier that Pettine was “not in position yet” to make a final decision on his choice for quarterback. However, after taking into consideration Manziel’s unprofessional conduct he demoted the 2014 first-round pick to the third string.

Pettine stated, “The improvements from last year to this year have been tremendous but he still has to consistently demonstrate that he has gained a good understanding of what it takes to be successful at the quarterback position on this level. It goes well beyond the field. We are going to continue to support him in every way possible, but at this point, we’ve decided it’s best to go with Josh as the starter going forward.”

The off-field character of a Roger Staubach or Peyton Manning is sadly missing.

The young alcoholic will be watching Sunday football games at home soon.

More interested in drinking than your job = formula for failure

Johnny Manziel just doesn’t get that simple equation

Yes, character still matters ... maybe the NFL scouts (and team owners) will remember that at the next draft

Thing is, there’s always been plenty of boozed up QB’s in the NFL, but Manziel is the type who can’t handle his drinking.

A wasted draft pick.

I don’t know about that. It’s a bye week and he wasn’t out doping up or shooting people. The video I saw was simply partying. If he’s not breaking the law or putting himself in danger, I fail to understand why the team would care. I certainly wouldn’t want MY employer to take such a view on what happens during my off hours, especially when I have an extra week off.

I am happy the staff was able to convince Jerry Jones this guy was not good for the Cowboys. Looking at their roster and their problem players, that is saying quite a bit!

No one seemed to care what Ted Kennedy did when he was “off the field”.

I’m a suffering Browns fan for over 50 years. This is just what happens in Cleveland. Back to the drawing board. Trent, Branden, Johny, etc. The list goes on and on. It’s that time of the year again. ned new coach, new quarterback, new running back, new offensive and defensive line, new receivers, etc. The curse of Carl Stokes and the burning Cuyahoga River.

Apparently, certain positions and certain races are held to different standards than others. Black pass rushers can be violent girlfriend beaters but white quarterbacks can't drink in a Resturant / bar.

Don’t forget that this guy has had a few chances already and just completed rehab as a result. For any “normal Joe” out on a bye week partying, this would probably be nothing. But if you are on a short trip wire because of past behaviors - and the need for some “tough love” with the rehab, then this sounds about right. I am surprised however, that they haven’t dumped the guy yet.

Not for Manziel, per team rules. He's quite the problem child.

My favorite QB from the past, Ken Stabler, would never make it today.
Kenny never missed a night at the bars and never met a curfew he wouldn’t sneak out of.

Those were different times and the athletes weren’t paid nearly as much as now.

Manziel should have hit rehab between college and training camp.
He’s going to lose a lot of money because of a drinking problem.
I wish him the best of luck putting the bottle down.

Funny that people would presume to know the terms of Manziel’s employment....

“I certainly wouldn’t want MY employer to take such a view on what happens during my off hours, especially when I have an extra week off.”

If you had an employer who is in full public view like the NFL so much, there is little doubt that these sideline events are a negative on its income-generation, and you would have had a contract that causes you to limit this type of thing.
