There’s some other black athletes who converted. I can’t think of any who were born to Muslim parents and were raised in that religion.

Ali joined Elijah Mohammed's Nation of Islam, which is a totally different kettle of fish from Islam as practiced in the Mideast and the rest of the world. Plus both Ali and Lew Alcindor converted from Christianity more as a political protest than anything.

It all makes sense if one connects the dots. Obama identifies as a Moslem when he doesn't practice taqqiyah, dreams of his father and all that.

Cassius Clay and Lew Alcindor.

They were not ‘muslim americans’; they were Americans who converted to muslim.

It was under the non-muslim upbringing that they became sports heroes.
