Kathleen Kane, Pennsylvania Attorney General, Fights for Her Political Life
NY Times ^ | DEC. 18, 2015 | MICHAEL WINES

The emails were arresting enough: videos, photographs, cartoons and jokes, some depicting sex acts; others mocking or demeaning blacks, gays, Muslims and even the poor and uneducated. But just as disturbing is where they were found: on Pennsylvania government computers, in email accounts whose owner included some of the state’s most powerful figures.

Since Kathleen Kane, Pennsylvania’s attorney general, released the first of the messages last year, a cabinet officer and a State Supreme Court justice have resigned, another justice is clinging to his job, and scores more have been censured or fired. It is the sort of scandal that an ambitious politician could easily ride to public acclaim and higher office.

Higher office, however, now appears out of the question. For Ms. Kane, the email scandal has become a last-ditch weapon in a struggle to keep her job, and perhaps her freedom.

Ms. Kane, 49, the first woman and first Democrat to win the attorney general’s post since it became an elective office in 1980, was a rising star in Pennsylvania Democratic politics three years ago. Today, she faces two counts of felony perjury and a host of lesser charges, from abuse of office to conspiracy — the consequences, prosecutors say, of leaking secret grand-jury proceedings in a ham-handed effort to discredit a Republican predecessor.

The charges, bolstered by statements Ms. Kane’s employees gave to investigators, prompted the State Supreme Court to suspend her law license; Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, to call for her resignation; and the State Senate to vote unanimously to consider removing her from office.

Yet Ms. Kane refuses to leave. She says that she is innocent but also that she has been framed by what she calls a political “old-boys’ network”

Most of her work is discrediting other Democrats. Are you arguing that she’s lying about them, too?

This woman is complete slime. It was only a matter of time before she got indicted. Hope she loses her law license.

She may be slimy, but certainly less slimy than those going after her.

I hope she keeps fighting until next November at least and drags down as many RATs as possible with her. Our Commonwealth is heading for a very nasty schism between those who are on Team Government and those of us who are just forced to pay the freight

She shouldn’t resign, she should run again and lose to a conservative Republican, or at least rough up the eventual rat nominee in a messy primary so he or she is more likely lose to a conservative Republican.

I espy 3 rat primary challengers for her so far, splitting the vote like that like helps her chances of winning the primary and ensuring GOP victory.

PA is no better off if another rat takes her place. They are all criminals. Having her on the ticket could be a real drain on the rest of the rats running, maybe even Hillary.

Judging by Trump mania, the party isn't interested in conservatism any more.
