Ted Cruz 'For a Time Such as This'
Townhall.com ^ | December 20, 2015 | Matt Barber

Posted on 12/20/2015 8:39:10 AM PST by Kaslin

I've never formally endorsed a candidate in any presidential primary. This time the stakes are too high not to. Look around. The world is on fire and the party of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, not to mention the GOP's Obama-enabling RINO establishment, are playing with gasoline.

And so, while he's been among my top picks all along, I am now proud to publicly endorse for president of the United States Sen. Ted Cruz, the man who best personifies the anti-establishment, principle over perceived pragmatism, survival over political correctness mood of the American electorate. I believe, God willing, that Sen. Cruz, a constitutional stalwart and steadfast statesman, is here "for a time such as this." He alone, in the spirit of Reagan v. Carter, can, in my estimation, mop the floor in the general election with Hillary Clinton (aka, Obama in a pantsuit).

Jesus warned: "If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand" (Mark 3:25). Nothing has borne out this reality in recent decades like that exasperating spectacle called the Republican presidential primary. These last few GOP horse races have been jam-packed with would-be conservative and faithfully Christian presidents who, after infighting with largely simpatico opponents, have canceled each other out, limped off to lick their wounds and left the perpetually underwhelmed GOP base to stay home and not vote for "imminently electable" establishment paragons like Presidents Dole, McCain and Romney. Divide and conquer. That's how the "moderate" GOP establishment plays the primary.

And then they lose the general.

Albert Einstein famously quipped that the definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." In that sense, we conservatives are insane.

How about trying something new?

This 2016 GOP presidential primary is shaping up to be a three-way race between Ted Cruz, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio. With Jeb Bush languishing in the low single digits, the Republican establishment is clearly poised to throw its weight behind Rubio, leaving Cruz as the lone principled conservative with a shot.

And Donald Trump? Well, Steve Deace, my friend and fellow Cruz supporter, recently summed up Trump's conservative bona fides on CNN: "I know the establishment hates Trump, but Cruz was right to welcome him to the GOP. We're trying to grow the party. And in Trump, here's a lifelong Democrat and progressive who has given more money to the likes of Al Sharpton and Rahm Emanuel than anyone watching this will see in a lifetime. Yet now, with the country at its tipping point moment, he's chosen to come over to our side and adopt conservatism. So we welcome him into the fold."

As Ted Cruz quipped in Tuesday's debate on CNN, "If I'm elected president, we will secure the border, we will triple the border patrol, we will get a wall that works, and I'll get Donald Trump to pay for it."

Trump laughed and replied, "I'll build it!" I suspect there's a place in a Cruz administration for Donald Trump.

Indeed, while there remains a handful of other honorable, eminently qualified and actually conservative men in the GOP primary, any of whom I'd be honored to support under different circumstances, it has now become clear, in my humble opinion; an opinion supported by the polls that the window of opportunity has closed for them. Now is the time for them to bow out and throw their support behind Cruz. Moreover, conservative and Christian leaders around the country, as well as voters of every stripe, should put aside personal friendships and loyalties to other candidates and, likewise, rally behind the Texas senator.

Let's beat the establishment at its own game.

Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume, a Washington insider who's made no secret of his disdain for Ted Cruz, recently gave him a backhanded compliment: "Cruz has so alienated his Senate colleagues, Republicans perhaps more than Democrats, that he's well positioned as an outsider. But his rise in the polls will put him in the spotlight. Iowa voters will have the holidays and all of January to ponder why Cruz is so disliked by his Senate colleagues. The question then will be this: Will they still feel the same way about him when they find out."

Mr. Hume, you're playing dumb. You know full well that Iowa voters, indeed most voters, understand completely why Ted Cruz is hated by many of his Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Unlike his establishment contemporaries, he often stands alone, resolute and unwavering, in keeping the promises he's made to those who elected him as their Senate representative. The political establishment, whether it's got a "D" or an "R" behind its name, hates Ted Cruz with a white-hot hatred because he threatens the status quo. They're politicians hell-bent, first and foremost, on maintaining political power. Sen. Cruz, on the other hand, is a servant leader, a true statesman, determined to do what's best for America no matter the cost to his personal and political standing. No, Mr. Hume, the fact that Ted Cruz is hated by Washington insiders such as yourself is not a mark against him. It's a big part of the reason he's gaining steam.

Indeed, candidate Cruz is the right man for right now. Of course, while our ultimate hope can rest in Christ Jesus alone, He does appoint men and women on earth to act as his hands and feet. Ted Cruz is immovable, fearless and dogged in his determination to do the right thing. His integrity, character, remarkable communication skills and extraordinary persuasive powers, as evidenced by his five landmark victories before the U.S. Supreme Court as Texas solicitor general, have, among other things, uniquely qualified this fine man to become the leader of the free world.

Proverbs 4:18 says, "The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day."

These are dark times. Ted Cruz is a righteous man. As president, he'll shine bright. He'll light the path. He'll help make America that "shining city on a hill" once more.

Cruz would never make it past Hillary. His base is too narrow.

That is exactly what was said about conservatives when the establishment pushed McCain and Romney down our throats. How did that work out? I am shocked at the scramble of positions. The establishment is against Donald the moderate. A massive number here on FR are for Donald the moderate. Does not matter about social positions. Does not matter about character. Does not matter about Constitutional knowledge and devotion. Does not matter about track record of consistency. Does not matter about being aligned with other Constitutional conservatives -- in fact, let's bash them in order to promote this moderate. Nothing matters but that he has a sharp tongue, a bully disposition, and he says he will build a wall along the border of Mexico. Never mind that his "Art of the Deal" book pretty much guarantees he plans on splitting differences to a final deal.

As the Red Eye Radio guys say, "We're doomed."

Do you believe he’ll build the wall? Do you believe he will deal with third world country immigrants brought here to live on welfare and vote rat? Do you think he’ll do something about the corporations giving their jobs to foreigners (something I see every day in my job)? Do you think he’ll do something about the absolutely insane spending by DC?

What don’t you think he’ll do that he’s talked about?

**********************************************************

One at a time: I don’t believe a wall will get built, period. Donald Trump is simply deluded himself, or lying to you, if he says he will. It’s just that simple. Let’s start with the simple blunt facts of the matter: the president doesn’t direct government spending, Congress does, so no money for a wall unless Congress approves it, and there is no way Congress will ever appropriate the hundreds of billions it would cost to build a latter-day Maginot line - unless, of course, Trump will be true to his liberal colors and just use executive orders like Obama.

I don’t believe Trump is going to do what he says on immigration, either. Firstly, he will have to get appropriations from Congress, which he is unlikely to get. Secondly, to accomplish what he claims - what you claim - he can do will require a latter-day Gestapo, with everyone required to carry papers and be subject to on-the-spot paper checks, and midnight searches of peoples’ houses, and vast concentration camps to hold all the rounded up illegals - which will inevitably contain a lot of citizens who looked too “illegal” to the Gestapo foot soldiers who rounded them up - and cattle cars to transport them from the camps to the border. That will simply never happen in America, and a president who seriously tried to implement it - again, through executive order, just like Obama - will find himself impeached and quite possibly jailed.

I don’t believe Trump will, or could, do anything on his own about the (false) claims of “corporations giving their jobs to foreigners” - BTW, that sounds exactly like a liberal who hates the Citizens United v. FEC case - because (a) he would, again, need the connivance of Congress, which is unlikely to happen - unless, of course, he pulls an Obama and uses the executive order - and (b) that would cause too much damage to the economy.

The only thing Trump’s doing is selling you a bill of goods; regrettably, you haven’t the sense God gave you to see that.

Thank you for posting. Good article. I do notice Trump attracts rude obnoxious people like him.

Ted Cruz is a statesman, something we desperately need to put the world back together after the progressives have worked so hard to destabilize it. To me Trump is anything but a statesman.

One of Ted Cruzes strong points is as a prosecuting attorney. Something most members of Congress FEAR.

Happens with Trump posts, too. It just stands out to you because you don’t like it. I get that. I feel the same way about posts I don’t like. What can we do?

That’s called crony capitalism. That’s how NYC rolls, particularly when it comes to R/E development. I thought all the cronyism in D.C. was something so-called “conservatives” were trying to get rid of? So why are they letting themselves be seduced by a crony capitalist?

News for you Kaslin. I AM an author AND an editor. Be very careful before you throw a punch that you don’t knock yourself out! Your fascist attitude is noted by many more Freepers than just me.

A great majority of your posts come from Townhall. Over and over again you post from Townhall. The fact that Townhall has been sliding ever so sneakily opposite where they were a few months ago, clearly indicates their political choices. Just happens SOME people can detect things which are not so obvious to others.

You might try getting down off your high-horse before you fall off or get bucked off and break your neck. FReepers are FREE to read and post where they wish. YOU do not own ANY thread whether you posted it or not!

Then you believe that nothing will get done unless the bought and paid for congress wants it done. So how will Cruz make a difference? We might as well elect Hillary according to you.

I actually believe that Congress ultimately will respond to an active electorate who are motivated by a POTUS with a big megaphone.

You sound defeatist to me and I can’t undestand why you think Cruz can do what Trump cannot.

I simply believe in the Constitution - which you apparently do not - and under the Constitution it is Congress, not the president, who gets to decide when government money gets spent. It’s just as simple as that.

Amusing post. The vast majority of Cruz supporters vividly paint their “hate” for Trump supporters daily. We are called every name that can be derived from Trump in an insulting and denigrating attempt to change our views. You do not see the equivalent coming from Trump supporters. We discuss the issues and point out the weaknesses and negative points about Cruz.
I was once a Cruz supporter. I went to Orlando a couple of years ago to hear him speak. I supported him for quite some time, but I never stopped watching what he did and how he voted and how, sometimes, his actions did not equate with his words. More and more i came to the conclusion he was just another politician and that was pretty well confirmed with his discussion about how he was “playing” Trump with bear hugs in his “secret meeting.” He said things behind closed doors that he never said in public. I prefer Trump’s throwing it all on the table style. Cruz proved himself to be sneaky like most other politicians. That’s a very big negative factor for me. Hate is a word used all the time by liberals. I wonder why you are throwing it into this discussion. Perhaps you don’t like the truth?

But are you a publisher?

Simple Definition of publisher

: a person or company that produces books, magazines, etc.

Full Definition of publisher

: one that publishes something; especially : a person or corporation whose business is publishing

It's obvious you don't know the difference.

The problem that the Cruz supporters cannot seem to confront is that Donald Trump is not Ted Cruz’s problem. Ted Cruz is.

Ted Cruz is too conservative for the average GOP voter. Historically the average GOP voter is middle of the road or slightly right of center. Same goes for the average independent voter. Trump is just a better fit.

And if Trump was not running in the race at all Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio would be on top as there would have been nobody with enough of a bullhorn to shout them down. Cruz would still be running a distant second or third.

So what you are going to see shake out is Cruz doing well in Iowa maybe winning and not taking another primary after that.

Posts I don’t like?

You’re a bit off base there, bud. I like Cruz just fine.

I just don’t see why people fail to search before posting and
Kaslin is getting special attention these days because she thanked
someone for calling me names, which I thought rather cowardly.

Congress already approved the wall. They just never built it.
A forceful president can push, shove, persuade or maneuver congress into funding what it has already approved. Trump can do it. Cruz can’t. Trump has already pinpointed government waste. He’ll put the dollars where they will do the most good, believe that!
When you throw out accusations about people knowing and not knowing , defending or not defending the constitution, then go on a rant about what happened under Hitler to try to persuade voters against Trump, I call it extremism and find it beyond insulting.

Saying I don’t believe in the Constitution is a cheap shot especially given that I said that Congress can be motivated by a POTUS with a big megaphone and an activated electorate. They have proven the one thing they care about is keeping their jobs.

Anyway, go ahead an support Cruz - who has less proven ability to get things done than Trump. I’ve been in business my entire life so I like Trump’s resume a whole lot better.

I find it interesting that those who hate the GOPe, have yet to figure out that they came into power by conservatives voting in lying liberals. Trump in his wisdom has figured it out, and switched to conservative just in time for the election, God save us from the moderate voters.

The media has also figured out trump, notice the free air time every day. We conservatives get played like a fiddle every time because we say what we think, however liberals are intrinsic liars, they say what they feel. If they wish to deceive, they simply say what WE say and we fall for it every time. Trump has said nothing that every freeper has not said over and over. He has never fought for Conservative principles before now. Ted Cruz has spent years fighting for Conservative principles against the GOPe and Progressives when at any time if he had just sat down and shut up they would have lined his pockets. But his principles meant more to him than his wealth.

Clearly, that is the kind of man this country and the world needs in the American Presidency. Let Trump prove himself with deeds fitting his words over time and I too will enthusiastically support him, but deeds and time is sorely lacking. That is why I choose Cruz.

Getting by in business doesn’t equal doing well in politics. Otherwise we’d be celebrating President Romney’s upcoming re-election, not squabbling over the lead up to Obama’s third term through his proxy Clinton.

Romney didn’t really want it from what I can tell. If I get the chance I’ll be hiring Trump. I think he truly loves our country and the now trashed middle class that was the key to our greatness for so long. He has a ton of pride and hates seeing us shredded to the credit of other countries.
