Trump will lose real Conservative and evangelical voters, just like Romney and McCain did.
I would be quite satisfied with either of them as POTUS, but I believe Ted Cruz is destined for greatness as a Supreme Court Justice..

Those two groups aren’t big enough to sway a national election. BTW, I’m a member of both.
He is always calm. Heidi says so also, inherited his mom’s steady temperament.
FNC has been hard on Ted from the start. Quit watching all but am shows last spring unless Ted is on. Not sure I will watch the last FNC debate.
It is black and white difference between Ted and Donnie.
Ted never yells, swears, name calls, or belittles. At the very least he had a much better upbringing.
None of the attributes that hardcore trumpees love, being rude, crude, loud, obnoxious and generally one I wouldn’t let my kids around.

I think you are correct.
Right now, Cruz is rising because Carson is sinking and Huckabee/Santorum/Paul are going nowhere. Supporters of those 4 have no where to go but Cruz.
The current rise of Cruz has zero to do with immigration or other issues...except Cruz has the image of the last evangelical standing, the last adherent of the Constitution standing.

Cruz is very good with the media.
Trump has been phenomenal but Cruz is head and shoulders above the rest of the field.
Most importantly he sees the media is his implacable enemy and treats them as such.

Generally, I can’t disagree with your estimation of
the electability of Cruz. It crosses my mind on
occasion. However, I wonder how many Democrat voters have
been so put off by the Obama administration and the failures
of Hillary and the Democrats that they might cross over
or stay home. I think that there could be a big surprise
waiting and the MSM would love to sit on it indefinitely
if they are even aware. I know this is primary season but
I would like to see Trump or Cruz appeal to potential
Democrat crossovers without compromising any conservative
policy points just to check the waters.
And just how is this supposed Conservative congress any different?(from left wing democrats)It used to be just the first two years of oslamas residency that he had a majority in congress, how could we have known he would end with the last two also!
