On Twitter, Donald Trump blasts Virginia GOP for loyalty pledge
Washington Post ^ | 12/27/15 | Jenna Portnoy

Donald Trump slammed the Republican Party of Virginia via Twitter on Sunday for its plan to require that 2016 primary voters sign a statement confirming they are Republicans.

Trump and others say the requirement could discourage independent and first-time voters from casting primary ballots in Virginia, where primaries are open to all registered voters.

According to some experts, the voter pledge has the potential to hurt Trump in particular, because his un-orthodox candidacy has attracted voters disenchanted with traditional party politics.

-snip-

David I. Ramadan (R-Loudoun) said Sunday that he supports the party requirement. He responded to Trump with an angry tweet of his own: "Our party, our rules; your $$s and your bullying do not work in the Commonwealth. MORON!!"

In an interview, Ramadan said, "If Trump considers himself a Republican and his supporters consider themselves Republican, then what's wrong with signing a pledge saying they're Republican?"

Ramadan, who is from Lebanon, said he received thousands of tweets from Trump supporters in response to his message. Some, he said, attacked both his position and his heritage, using obscenity and insulting images.

"That is the discourse that Trump creates," the lawmaker said. "That is pathetic, it's dangerous, it's un-American."

The Republican Party should then only allow registered Republicans to vote. Problem solved.

It’s unAmerican to require a loyalty pledge in an open primary. He should be dismissed from the party for his totalitarian views.

The Virginia RINOs don’t want to change the law to have closed primaries.
Because usually cross-over voters vote for them in the primaries.

This time it’s different though so they want to deter cross-overs.

And open primary is idiocy,

If the pledge only asked if you are now a Republican, fine, but this is not what it asks loyally to. My guess is that this will be dropped within days or weeks, just like every other time it is brought up.

These VA GOPe are hypocrits. When Ken Cuccineli(sp) ran against Mcawful(correct sp) leading Republicans supported the democrat Mcawful.

Someone needs to alert Trump of this recent history.

There have been no consequences to the Republican leaders who supported Mcawful!

Ramadan the MORON wants to change the rules that were fine in the 2012 primary so that he can rig the primary against his political opponents like Trump. And then he calls Trump supporters Morons! What a loser!

But the GOPe’s love open primaries, except when Trump is running.

I could not agree more that GOP primaries should be closed.
But this timing smells very bad.

For what? Virginia law specifically permits this kind of loyalty pledge for primary voters. Trump can fight it all he wants using his bully pulpit, but there's nothing for his lawyers to "punch the hell out of" in Virginia.

“The Republican Party should then only allow registered Republicans to vote. Problem solved.”

Hmmmm ..?? I thought that’s the way it should work. When I go to vote in a primary, I’m already on a list as an “R”, and I get an “R” ballot.

I think they want a list so they can target the Trump voters; especially if they’re not paying members of the RNC .. which I’m not; but I’m still a registered voter.

Sure, happy to post the relevant VA law (thought someone had already done so, but that was in another thread). It's section 24.2-545 of the Virginia Code:

A. The duly constituted authorities of the state political party shall have the right to determine the method by which the state party will select its delegates to the national convention to choose the party's nominees for President and Vice President of the United States including a presidential primary or another method determined by the party. The state chairman shall notify the State Board of the party's determination at least 90 days before the primary date. If the party has determined that it will hold a presidential primary, each registered voter of the Commonwealth shall be given an opportunity to participate in the presidential primary of the political party, as defined in § 24.2-101, subject to requirements determined by the political party for participation in its presidential primary. The requirements may include, but shall not be limited to, the signing of a pledge by the voter of his intention to support the party's candidate when offering to vote in the primary. The requirements applicable to a party's primary shall be determined at least 90 days prior to the primary date and certified to, and approved by, the State Board.

The Virginia GOP proposal is, if anything, less onerous than the one explicitly permitted by the law. They are not asking anyone to pledge who they will or will not vote for in the general - only asking people to confirm that they are Republcians. Seems a reasonable request for people seeking to vote in a Republican primary. Sure, Trump may be bringing in previously-unaffiliated voters, but if those voters want to vote in the Republican primary, I don't think it's too much to ask them to state that they are Republicans.

So now the RINOs are concerned about loyalty pledges and closed primaries. If Trump wasn’t running they wouldn’t be pulling this crap.
