Homeland Security rejects Minn. request for Real ID extension (drivers' licenses 9 states impacted)

The federal government has denied a request from the state's political leaders for more time to get compliant with the new Real ID requirement, but it won't immediately imperil the ability of Minnesotans to board commercial flights after Jan. 1.

In a letter sent Monday, two assistant secretaries at the Department of Homeland Security wrote to Gov. Mark Dayton that "Minnesota has not provided adequate justification for continued noncompliance with the Real ID standards that would warrant granting your request for extension,"the letter stated.

That means Minnesota driver's licenses are officially not sufficient identification for the general public to be allowed on U.S. military bases and other federal facilities with semi-restricted areas that are accessible with proper identification. The list of facilities like that in Minnesota are few,but it could be an issue for Minnesotans with business in places like Washington, D.C.

At a still-unspecified date in 2016,Homeland Security will extend that prohibition to the boarding of commercial flights. Unless the Minnesota Legislature and Dayton have repealed a 2009 law by then that bars Real ID on state licenses, then Minnesotans at that point would need a passport even for domestic flights.

But the agency has promised at least 120 days' notice before that requirement is implemented, meaning Minnesota politicians appear to still have a window to fix the Real ID problem before a significant percentage of the state's residents are directly impacted.

According to recent DHS data, most states are either in compliance with Real ID or have made enough progress that DHS has granted them extensions until at least October.

However, nine states and several US territories are due to have their exemption expire on January 10, 2016.The states facing a January expiration are Alaska,California,Illinois,Missouri,New Jersey,New Mexico,South Carolina, and Washington. Puerto Rico Guam, and the US Virgin Islands face the same deadline. Minnesota and American Samoa are already listed as non-compliant.

T.S.A. Moves Closer to Rejecting Some Driver's Licenses

"As soon as next year, a driver's license may no longer be enough for airline passengers to clear security in some states, if the Department of Homeland Security has

Federal officials said they would soon determine whether Transportation Security Administration agents would start enforcing a 10-year-old law that required states to comply with a set of federal standards when issuing driver's licenses.

The issue is quickly coming to a head, and the debate over identification and privacy has only intensified after the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and California.........."

To be honest, citizens don’t have to pass a security check to get drivers licenses either.

So the IRS can now deny passports. The citizens of several states may need a passport to travel domestically. A declared socialist is running for president as are several undeclared socialists. There is an America-hating, muslim terrorist-loving occupant in the White House.

Communist China, on the other hand, is adopting Reaganomics to stimulate growth. Go figure.

This is like coming to the end of the Allen Drury series that started with Advise and Consent. I just can’t tell if we are in Come Niniveh, Come Tyre, or the Promise of Joy.

MN is such a big government state, which is never afraid to collect ever greater payments for services like driver’s licenses, license tabs, etc., I don’t understand why they were among the states that jumped on this right away.

“they would soon determine whether Transportation Security Administration agents would start enforcing a 10-year-old law”

What. . .take away all that valuable time TSA mouth-breathing 7-11 rejects use as they grope old people and molest children, while at the same time, wave muslime terrorists through without a second look.

Never happen.

Come on, now.

Just look at how well the refugee vetting is done by govt....Oh, CA? OK? MA? TX?

Well, how ‘bout border enforcement and visa over-stays? In-State tuition rates vs. Citizen from another State? Special driving ‘licenses’? Ouch!

Hmmmm, what about taxes and SS? EITC fraud and over-payments? SS/SSDI given to those that never paid a dime?? Oy!

Give me a bit. There’s got to be ONE....somewhere, right?!

Unless, of course you are newly arrived from Syria, in which case you can just show your ISIS card. No real ID needed.
