Like Donald “Biff†Trump's empty speeches, his New Hampshire campaign's ground game turns out to be an exaggeration.
The Trump campaign released a seemingly impressive list of 200 town chairs, which Trump said was evidence of “incredible grassroots support across the state of New Hampshire.â€
How did Trump build such a powerful team of campaign volunteers, stretching from Coos to the sea? He made it up, like everything else he says.
To be sure, there are some actual Trump supporters on Trump's list of supporters. But there are also Jeb Bush and John Kasich supporters, undecided voters, and even a local reporter who signed up for Trump campaign emails.
Like most campaigns, the Trump team captures voter contact information online and from people attending his rallies. Most campaigns try to turn that voter contact into support. Trump just assumes everyone visiting his website or showing up to watch his circus act likes him as much as he likes himself.
Trump's celebrity and ability to generate unlimited free press have let him thrive despite his lack of a traditional field organization.
Maybe the polls will hold up. Maybe there is a groundswell for a crass narcissist with little knowledge of or interest in public policy. Maybe Trump can convert his celebrity into votes without running a grassroots campaign.

I’m campaigning for CRUZ - but I can say for certain there is a grassroots movement for TRUMP. They are NOT the GOPe. They do not attend the usual GOPe cocktail rallies with the same GOPe attendees wearing different outfits to each event. These are nameless newbies who are out there and are reffed up to win. TRUMP rallies should send a message to the GOPs: Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Yesterday (12/28) when we were talking to him, he seemed
less concerned with Bill Clinton than with the Union Leader
in New Hampshire, which is pushing Chris Christie.
