There is one gay but he is shown as scheming and unhappy but later on a bit sympathetic. There is a Marxist type but he recovers somewhat. The minorities are Catholics.
Yeah, Tom is shown as growing out of his Marxism as he becomes and adult and has increased personal and professional responsibilities. Along the lines of the old edict attributed to Churchill.
At the end he flees to America since he’s no longer accepted in his old Marxist circles, but also wont ever really fit with the old line aristocracy.
In many ways he can be seen as an ancestor of the “Reagan Democrat”
