A U.S. Marine was arrested Tuesday at his base in an Arizona city near the Mexican border, some 1,100 miles from where he allegedly shot and killed a 20-year-old college student who'd just rung in the new year.
Eric Jamal Johnson was taken into custody in Yuma "for killing Sara Mutschlechner," Denton, Texas, police spokesman Shane Kizer told CNN.
The U.S. Marine Corps said in a news release that Johnson was arrested in connection with the Denton shooting around 6:30 a.m. (8:30 a.m. ET) Tuesday at the Marine air station in Yuma where he's based.
Johnson, a corporal, belongs to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One.
Mutschlechner was driving through the Dallas suburb with three passengers around 2 a.m. (3 a.m. ET) Friday when a gray Honda Pilot with five to six males inside pulled up next to them, Kizer said at a Tuesday afternoon press conference.
"It was an amicable conversation to begin with, but quickly went downhill and some derogatory statements were made toward the female occupants of that vehicle," the Denton Police spokesman told reporters.
Kizer described those "very derogatory" remarks as being of a "sexual nature," adding that a male inside Mutschlechner's vehicle responded by calling them out as offensive.

Too bad she didn’t shoot first.
Military terrorist?
Black boy was denied by a white girl. He did not like that.
I should add that a lot of people could figure out what happened and that it wasn’t a case of “road rage” as initially reported.

There is, typically in every car in the USA, a skinny foot-pedal on the right-hand side of the driver’s floor board.
It should have been used early and heavily.
Well, like every barrel of apples, there is at least one bad one and this black marine is a fine example of one for our beloved and respected Marine Corp.
I would prefer the marines court martial the sob and give him life at hard labor in an Arizona desert!
Although, I must say this guy is likely going to be tried in Denton and he should be REAL concerned about that. He most likely WILL get the death penalty and in Texas it will happen.
None of this will bring back the life of this beautiful young woman. I’m so sorry for her and for her family.
You can take the homie outta the hood, but even the USMC couldn’t take the feral outta the homie.
I’m betting Jamal was hanging with the homies and wanted to show what a badass he was. Just goes to show you that not all Marines (or any service member) are honorable people.
Big ears just like O.
I would be permanently banned from FR if I said what I think about this person. I do wish him the shortest possible remaining time to be breathing.
Every homie in that vehicle should be prosecuted for accessory to murder since they didn’t turn him in within minutes of the act.
This might be a case where Texas can get done what the USMC can’t. Fry the bastard.
Unfortunately, Obama and his appointees are working as hard as they can to get as many of the wrong people into the military as possible. The Marines take pretty good care of themselves, but even they are subject to this abuse from above.
When you think of a gang member, what comes to mind? Is it a tattooed young man, throwing up gang signs and flashing big wads of cash? Or a violent ex-con involved in drugs? Whatever mental image the term evokes, it’s probably not that of a clean-cut US soldier. However, one professor at Middle Tennessee State University says gang members are most definitely serving in the military.
Dr. Carter Smith has studied gangs in the military for years, after first discovering the problem as a criminal investigator in the Army. While one independent study shows less than one-percent of service members are in gangs, Smith says that is still far too many. “If there’s a million and a half people in the military, less than one-percent is how many? Fifteen-thousand. Are you okay with 15,000 people trained to kill, maim?” he asks.
Smith believes most gang members join the military to get away from the gang, then find it difficult to break away. He fears what might happen when military training, weapons and equipment are combined with a gang creed. Drug running, intimidation, violence - Smith says all are possibilities.
More thorough background checks might help weed out gang members. In most cases, though, Smith says the military only checks for convictions, and at times, even those with felony arrests have been allowed to join.

Someone in the shooter’s vehicle must have gone to the police and turned him in.
Prayers for this girl and her family. The news media will sweep this under the rug as so many other racist murders have been swept when it is the white person doing the dying.
I believe it to be the case that most ordinary crimes, particularly those committed off-base, are turned over the the relevant civilian authorities for prosecution. He will be tried for murder by the State of Texas, and faces a high probability of ending his life with his veins pumped full of nasty chemicals.
That’s true: “It’s the man that makes the Corps; the Corps does not make the man.” The Corps is microcosm of our society with its usual 10% criminals. Sometime thugs can be turned around; sometimes not. Sad for the young lady and her family.
