ill Actually the first Rose Bowl was played in 1902. Michigan beat Stanford 49-0.

The stadium that a journalist dubbed the Rose Bowl was built in 1922, so those earlier games can't really be called Rose Bowl games.

It was the Rose Bowl.

They named the stadium for the game.

Hey, I take it back.

I looked it up.

The term bowl in bowl games comes from the Rose Bowl name.

It was the Tournament of Roses game, but you are right it was not called bowl.

I never knew the genesis of the term bowl in college football before now.
