A Florida woman who collapsed and later died after being arrested for refusing to leave a rural hospital emergency room may have lived if medical staff and police had not assumed she was faking illness, her lawyers said on Wednesday.

Barbara Dawson, 57, complained of abdominal pains at Calhoun Liberty Hospital in the Florida Panhandle town of Blountstown five days before Christmas, but medical staff examined and released her.

When she refused to leave, the hospital called the police, who handcuffed her and took her outside, where she collapsed in the hospital driveway. Dawson was returned to the hospital but died of a blood clot in her lungs the next day.

I tell patients that going to a physician is sometimes like going to a mechanic. Not all mechanics find the problem, not all listen well when you tell them what your concerns are, and some will keep ‘fixing’ things until they find something that works. You have to find a mechanic you trust. The same is true for physicians. I like it when patients question me. It means they are involved, and actively participating in their own care. I also tell patients that they need to be their own biggest advocates, because the system and physicians can and will fail you. Don’t ever assume that the first diagnosis is absolutely correct. It might be, and hopefully is, but it’s your life - so be vigilant and make sure you get good explanations that make it clear that the doc has thought through the problem and possible diagnoses carefully.

Things are changing (generally for the worse) because of all the distractions of ‘clicking’ boxes on computers to fulfill bureaucratic requirements, and we definitely need big changes from where we are right now.

Regarding this particular woman, it’s very tragic.

Does Obamacare fine Doctors for “unnecessary” tests???. Anyway, I have put up with a few weird things. Bladder infections that made me go off the ledge mentally. Tests came back normal. I am 5 feet tall. After I kicked a 300lb. assistant down the stairs, they did further tests. I also had cancer—probably the only reason they decided to keep me. Later a nurse told me my brain was in the process of being poisoned. Drs. have also told me some over-the counter medications e.g. ImmodiumAD would not help my “runs”. When I got home 5 mo. later it worked like a charm. However, I must admit they saved my life (stage 4 cancer). But it took a lot of insistence on my part.

Agreed, and my family doctor is probably one of the best in the state as far as I’m concerned. There are many great doctors but in the end they are just people. Some of them are lazy, some miss small details and some are great.

In any case patients need to actively take an interest and do research for their conditions so they can ask questions. Even good doctors only spend a short time looking at your case before they are onto the next.

They have received their orders from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. Never forget that this was what the people who voted for Obama, via their votes, demanded be done.

The Children of Israel demanded that a king be set over them to rule them. The people of the United States of America [I never consider them to be Citizens or civilians]demanded a muslim to rule over them. The Holy Bible tells us the fate of the Children of Israel. History will tell the fate of the United State. Both decisions resulted in disasters for each party. unfortunately for us, when it rains, it rains on the just as well as the unjust.

No way! They should be furious that the Affordable Care Act, as written into law, would’ve been as clear as mud to them had they bothered to read it.

It’s like all the Osteoporosis drugs. All are pure poison. FDA Flagged, with Reclast being the worst, and Foreto being double flagged with all the other warnings plus a Black Box which is the Highest for Bone Cancer. Doctors are supposed to warn patients of these risk, but they don’t.
Safety update for osteoporosis drugs, bisphosphonates, and atypical femur fractures, A FIB, Jaw Degeneration, Kidney failure deaths. RECLAST NOT TO BE GIVEN TO ASTHMA PATIENTS.

I just got the OP drugs need lecture Tuesday, and I told the doctor NO. Find a natural way to treat it or skip asking. I’ve read all I need to know on the dangers of all of them. They are taken on a fasting stomach.. and if you have GI issues you can end up with ulcers or holes in your intestines that will kill you. All have high GI issues that you are NOT informed of.

http://www.fda.gov/drugs/drugsafety/drugsafetypodcasts/ucm229800.htm

Black box warning Foreto

http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=21853

Nexium and all PPIs are meant to be a 2 week drugs, not a life time ones. 2 big issues you are never told about. Barrett’s Esophagus which is a type of pre-cancer and Brittle Bones Osteoporosis.

Reglan is used for Slow Motility nausea and vomiting, it is black boxed for 12 days, yet Gastro’s leave patients on it for years. Neurological Side effects. The Other drug which is not FDA approved is Domperidone, Europe’s equivalent of our FDA just Black Boxed it last year for Heart disease at 12 days use.

Statins are killer drugs. Do your research.

Gardasil has paid out $6 Mil in deaths, thousands are on the lawsuit list, including my granddaughter, it ruined her life. Several countries have banned it.

FDA and drug manufactures make BILLIONS off these drugs yearly.

The same thing happened to a sixth grade student here a few years ago. Hospital sent him home, family brought him back but it was to late. The ruptured bowel poisoned him.

Horrible.

Or every 6 months. They just discovered...actually known I had an enlarged heart for several years, but now there is a small leaky valve, to small to be bothered with. Come back in 6 months.

And if the Cardio thinks I’ll go through the torture of a full cardio testing every 6 months he’d best think again. Pure torture. Primary’s it’s every 3 months. And with the new Federal laws on narcotics you need a new script every month. And if you are under the DOD MANDATE to use the Military Dispensary for Retirees on Tricare Life, it must contain the words CHRONIC PAIN or all you will get is a 2 week supply. NORCO which use to be Loretabs before they took out most of the Tylenol is the most commonly prescribed. 5 mg is like taking 2 extra strength Tylenol’s. Only they make you addicted and sleepy. Don’t do much for Chronic high level pain.

if the truth was known, I would guess that this woman was a frequent flier, a diabetic who didn't follow any diet or medicines, a drug user, and drug seeker....she had a rep....

sorry that she died, but if people only knew how frustrating so many cases are...people who drink, drug, overeat, and then wonder why they have pain, open sores, blood clots, etc....

but its a black thang to sue...

hospitals DO NOT ADMIT NOR DISCHARGE....the docs do that...

Medicare and Medicaid and ALL insurances do not let drs do "just in case" CT's or MRI's or extra labs etc....there has to be a clearly defined reason stated for these tests to be done...

some docs are lazy or lackadaisical, but so are patients....

stop drinking...stop drugging..stop gorging yourself with food...exercise...take your medications...

and when people don't follow instuctions, they get soooo mad at the health system....

doctoring is really a two way street...

Well I live in Thailand. My mother in law has had back pain for years but the GVT hospital (free) was not helping. So my TW and I took her to the private hospital (on my nickle). The did X-Rays, blood test, scans, etc. Gave the mom some medicine and she is doing a lot better.

However, I had to suck up the hospital expenses, came to about $250 for all. But I am the favored son-in-law these days.

You are welcome, the medical profession knows of no other way to improve bone density.

I’m Going natural, 15,000 Calcium (citrate is the most common) But I’m that small percent that can’t handle the GI side effects and use Coral Calcium. Half the amount in Magnesium that is NOT OXIDE bound. K2 Complex as it forces the Calcium to stay in your bones and not go into your arteries. Strontium Citrate 400 mg. D3 at least 5,000 UI.

K2 http://www.dentalaegis.com/cced/2011/10/bridging-the-gap-between-osteoporosis-and-osteonecrosis-of-the-jaw-preventing-and-treating-bronj-with-mk4

Here are 2 books you can go to Amazon to get her. I recommend the first one first as it is all natural. Where as book 2 uses the drug and natural approach. Plus she explains more about the drugs and what they really do or should I say don’t do.

Your Bones: How You Can Prevent Osteoporosis and Have Strong Bones for Life - Naturally Lara Pizzorno 2013

The Whole Body Approach to OP
R. Keith McCormick

I had to research each one of the drugs as I’m real drug sensitive, the side effects are horrible. RXList is the most useful for that kind of research. All can be found on google search. Including the horror stories.

She had a massive heart attack 13 years ago so I worry about her arteries. I’ve told her that calcium hardens, magnesium relaxes. I use magnesium gel on the bottom of my feet. Even though I’m not heavy and don’t smoke, eat poorly, etc. my blood pressure has shot up lately so we must have unfortunate genetics. I’m trying everything to get it down.

I’ll forward that link to her. Thanks!!

I learned recently that there is a blood test that will tell if you have or are having a heart attack. The heart puts out an enzyme if it has sustained any damage. I know because my husband had a heart attack recently and the ER knew within minutes!

His pain was on the right side of his chest and in his right arm instead of the left like we had always been told. I wonder why the ER didn’t do this test on this woman?
