In 1651, Thomas Hobbes wrote that free people consent to give up their individual rights in order to establish a political community, i.e., civil society, which establishes laws so that everyone can enjoy security. Although simplistic, this theory aligns with the following arguments for gun control:
1. Private citizens should give up the right to own military-style weapons, so that a violent person cannot get one to use on innocent people. In our First World society, we have police, sheriffs, constables, SWAT teams, reservists, military, Special Forces, and a variety of teams that can respond to an emergency at a momentâs notice. If military weapons are needed, a cadre of weapons can arrive with expertly trained professionals.
2. Citizens who want guns should give up the right of privacy so that they can be vetted to keep guns out of the wrong hands. If you donât have anything to hide, you should submit to a background check. The government can keep a registry so that if a gun is passed to a new owner it can be tracked so that it is not used unlawfully.
3. Gun owners should give up the right to buy large quantities of ammunition, so that a violent person cannot obtain thousands of rounds of ammo. Similarly, gun owners should use smaller magazines to limit the round count so that if someone uses a gun unlawfully there may be fewer fatalities.
4. Lastly, it doesnât support Hobbesâ theory, but this argument often accompanies the previous ones: The NRA should be universally recognized as a heartless political engine that is funded by firearm manufacturers for profit and it mocks the deaths of innocent people.
I spent many years making these arguments in support of gun control.
Then I bought a gun.

Obama is the embodiment of Hobbes. Cruz is the embodiment of Locke. If you understand political philosophy—and most FReepers do, of course—that is all you need to know.
None of the first three assumptions are correct unless the government in question is benign, fair to all and will stay that way. Ain’t never gonna happen.
It was never about guns. It is always about control.
Read on. She refutes her own arguments as being flawed.
Fixed it.
In short....
I was happy in my policatically ideologcal ignorance seeing no real reason to change. After all they were wrong and I was right. Then I actually bothered to understand the things I was so against. Wow, I was wrong...Imagine that. How could that possibly be? Its great over here...I was lied to.
LOL, liberals are so open minded arent they. Glad to see this one was big enough to admit being wrong. Most never will.
Ping?
LOL
She says:
I used to wish that the government would get rid of all the guns and then everyone would be safe, but I discovered that the utopia in my mind was actually a society with no bad guys. It was never about guns at all.
When you rid yourself of the wrong idea that all people are basically "good", you see the logic of needing to protect yourself and family.
Welcome to sanity island.
When my wife took her carry permit class, there was a young girl who had never handled a firearm taking the class at the insistence of her boyfriend. She was so scared of the gun that she was crying at the range. The instructor loaned her a .22 pistol to qualify with and after she found out that the gun didn’t have any recoil and wasn’t going to jump out her hands and shoot her, she turned and said, “That was fun!”
Take an anti-gunner shooting today.
A bit of good news.
Wow, for a minute there you had me worried! I thought I had opposition:)

Great article, thanks for posting.
3.Another example of going after the good guys is limiting magazine capacity. This does not curb crime or help keep guns out of the hands of bad guys. Plus, even I can complete a mag change in under 2 seconds, so it is pointless. Focus on the stuff that matters.
I have heard anti-gunners reply "if you can change magazines so quickly, then it shouldn't matter if magazines are limited to 10 rounds."
My response to anti gunners is
let me tie you up for just five
minutes...after half an hour,
I ask them how do they like it.
My reply would be, if it doesn’t matter how many rounds in the magazine, why limit them to 10 rounds?
Welcome, Robyn! (sound of people clapping). If you ever feel a need to get rid of your gun, call me and I’ll talk you out of it.
Tom Gresham’s reply is “how many is too many? 11? 10? 7 (NY SAFE Act)?. The ultimate answer is always zero.”
Gun Control=A steady hand and hitting what you’re aiming at!!
What part of The Right of the People to keep and Bear Arms Shall not be infringed!!! What Don’t the left understand.. Extra Taxes on guns, Ammo etc is infringing on my right to keep and Bear arms!!!
