A Sad Day for the Music World

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: It was a shocking, somewhat sad day for many in the music world today. And that's the surprise death of David Bowie, who succumbed to cancer after 18 months. Many did not know that he had cancer. I have to admit there are only a couple of David Bowie songs that I like.

I was not one of these dyed-in-the-wool David Bowie fans but he had a couple of tunes I really like, and the first one is this one, ChiCom Girl. And there's one other. No question, he was a supremely talented rock 'n' roll crooner. (playing China Girl) That wasn't nine seconds, I can tell you that. You see, remember the video to this? (song continues) I first even saw this on MTV. (song continues) David Bowie. How old was he? (interruption) Sixty-nine.

My generation. I just never... The Ziggy Stardust days? I never got into it. (interruption) No, I didn't see the movie The Man Who Fell to Earth. This is it. This and the other song. (Cut to Let's Dance) These are the only two David Bowie things that I know. That's it. This is Let's Dance. These are both from the 1980s, I believe, during my absence from radio. It's when I worked for the Kansas City Royals. (interruption) Yeah, I remember playing this. Oh, yeah. (song continues)

Anyway, what was he, about five nine and a hundred pounds? I mean, he was a string bean, but he had this amazing voice. And to people that were big in the music business, he was incredibly innovative and talented, and I wanted to acknowledge his passing. But those are the only two songs. Well, that and the Major Tom thing, "Ground control to Major Tom," which I guess is Space Oddity, which he was. There's no question about it.

Maybe together somewhere, they're singing Little Drummer Boy again.

And then again; maybe not.

Bing was a Catholic

Bowie?  Who knows, really...

Regarding religion, in 2005 he said, "Questioning my spiritual life has always been germane to what I was writing. Always." He added that he was bothered by being "not quite an atheist".[223] In the Esquire interview "What I've Learned", he stated, "I'm in awe of the universe, but I don't necessarily believe there's an intelligence or agent behind it. I do have a passion for the visual in religious rituals, though, even though they may be completely empty and bereft of substance. The incense is powerful and provocative, whether Buddhist or Catholic."[224]

Bowie showed an interest in Buddhism that began in 1967. He frequently studied in London under the Tibetan Lama Chime Rinpoche before becoming a solo artist. During a 2001 interview, Bowie claimed that "after a few months of study, he told me, 'You don't want to be Buddhist ... You should follow music.'"[225] Bowie later wrote the song "Silly Boy Blue" in tribute to Rinpoche on his 1967 album David Bowie. Bowie also became a student of the crazy wisdom Tulku Chögyam Trungpa.[226]

Sounds like Pete Townshend’s “The Seeker” could have applied to Bowie.

But, seriously, what was your point?

I think it may have been on the order of...

...there's no accounting for taste.

I agree with you. It would be different if he had died from drug overdose

I have heard of him that's all

From biography.com

David Bowie was an English rock star known for dramatic musical transformations, including his character Ziggy Stardust. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

David Bowie was born in South London's Brixton neighborhood on January 8, 1947. His first hit was the song "Space Oddity" in 1969. The original pop chameleon, Bowie became a fantastical sci-fi character for his breakout Ziggy Stardust album. He later co-wrote "Fame" with John Lennon which became his first American No. 1 single in 1975. An accomplished actor, Bowie starred in The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Bowie died on January 10, 2016, from cancer at the age of 69.

Known as a musical chameleon for his ever-changing appearance and sound, David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, South London, England, on January 8, 1947.

David showed an interest in music from an early age and began playing the saxophone at age 13. He was greatly influenced by his half-brother Terry, who was nine years older and exposed young David to the worlds of rock music and beat literature.

Yes, but what was your point?

Bringing Trump into this thread to make an idiotic political point?

Just thought you were a little better than that....

I promise, I'm not trying to fight with you. But I don't see what could be more "Trump" than expressing disgust with government systems and political parties. To be honest, it's one of the things I like best about the man.

This is worth adding to your list

Bowie's performance of "'Heroes'" on June 6, 1987 at the German Reichstag in West Berlin was considered a catalyst to the eventual fall of the Berlin Wall,

Then let me be the first to apologize.

I must say though, the post didn't read that way.....must be the toxic environment around here.....

The Rock Me Tonight video by Billy Squier was so gay it destroyed his career.

Ah, nice to see Trevor Bolder (who died of pancreatic cancer back in 2013) get a mention. Bass players with retiring personalities usually don’t find a lot of fame no matter how good they are. And Bowie wasn’t exactly “good” to his supporting cast in those days.

So, I’ll give T.B. a little shout out here:

We sure have lost a lot of terrific musicians and such in the last few years...

There are a lot of greats who pass whose deaths don’t move me particularly. Whose music or talent I enjoyed somewhat or didn’t really know. But Bowie. He was always on my turntable, speaker, CD player. I loved his stuff. Many of his albums were backdrops to years of my life.

I really did think he was gay all this time. He was apparently a closeted hetero all along.

I am very sad he’s gone. Liver cancer, you wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

He has admitted to be so strung out he would say anything.

I figure he was too high the night I saw him at the Forum in LA. He came out in a white jumpsuit and sang for only 45 minutes, seemed to be phoning it in, then left the stage. I was such a huge fan and I was disappointed.
