My daughter wanted to study overseas in college and Turkey was her top pick. I told her “over my dead body,” so she obliged me and went to a technical university in Utrecht, Netherlands instead. I went to Utrecht to meet her at the end of her studies and we did a two-week tour together. She wanted to visit Morrocco (this was a year or so after we got Osama) and I again told her “No way.” We enjoyed France, Spain, and Portugal together, instead.

Naive kids need strong guidance to survive this world. I’m very sorry to hear about this young, very foolish Swedish woman. I don’t recall hearing this story when it happened.

1. I'm glad that you had that time with your daughter. It's MOST precious, isn't it?

2. You are a GOOD dad.
NO ONE who wanted to see another sunrise would have EVER thought of bothering your daughter while she was with her most fervent and ferocious protector.

3. The Swedish fathers, NO DOUBT, tell their daughters of the perils of life. However, Swedes are emancipated adolescents at FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. What kind of common sense does a FIFTEEN YEAR OLD have? NOT MUCH!!
They are ABSOLUTELY positive that they know EVERYthing about EVERYTHING and, of course, they don't.
This isn't the first or last Swedish moron idiot huge-stupid girl/young woman who will face these perils.
PERHAPS, if the Swedish divorce rate weren't so high more girls would be able to benefit from dad's protection.

My daddy had a basso profundo voice and a look-to-kill. Even my girlfriends hoped that my daddy never answer the phone, as it scared them. Girls need more daddies like you. She WILL appreciate you more one day when she is mom to a young, stupid daughter, who will probably hate her when daughter turns fifteen. All 15-year-old girls hate their mothers and think them stupid. It all changes when said daughter turns eighteen. Amazing how smart mother became in those three short years. Then they are best friends.

What are the odds that SOME FReeper will now lecture me on how THEIR daughters did NOT hate them?

Now where, o where, is someone to figure the odds on this?

By the way, I've been to Turkey. We went with a group. We all loved it...as long as we stayed in the tourist area. It was all smiles.

HOWEVER, when we left the tourist area it was NOT very nice. The people were surly and unhelpful.

Naive kids do need guidance.

Elin Krantz was 27 years old. She may have been naive but she was not a kid.

What happened to her was awful just like it’s awful when it happens anywhere to anyone. My college sophomore is a nursing student and wanted to do a winter break session or summer session in Guatemala or Brazil.I was all like, “why?” because it’s something I never wanted to do as a kid/young adult/college student/ever. But she’s a better person than me. I discouraged it because I didn’t want to worry about her more than I already do plus we have needs right here she could do but they’re not a part of any college program.

So I told her when she graduates college and wants to travel as a nurse to some third world country then more power to her but until then, she’s not going unless she pays for it herself. I’ll still worry, I’ll still discourage her but, by then I won’t have a say in her decisions.

A 27 year old is not a child or a kid. She’s an adult and she made her choices, none of which included her being raped and murdered. I wouldn’t dream of telling my 25 and 23 year old children what they can and can’t do.The almost 20 year old and the 18 year old, yeah I can still do that to a certain extent. We have to prepare them for the world.
