Cruz previews his State of the Union message
Washington Examiner ^ | 1/12/16 | Gabby Morrongiello

Posted on 01/12/2016 7:14:28 PM PST by Isara

LONDONDERRY, N.H. - Texas Sen. Ted Cruz outlined his own vision for the country Tuesday night, miles away from the nation's capitol where Congress and members of the political elite - the "Washington cartel" in Cruz's words - have gathered for President Obama's final State of the Union address.

"Tonight the State of the Union is strong and the state of the American people is we are waking up," Cruz, who's second in the Washington Examiner's latest presidential power rankings, told hundreds of voters packed like sardines into a middle-school cafeteria.

The Texas senator spent most of his speech Tuesday previewing what his first State of the Union would look like should he be elected president.

"In 2018, let me tell you how I hope the State of the Union goes," he began. "'My fellow Americans, the State of the Union is strong. Just over a year ago, millions of Americans rose up and shocked the Washington cartel - they said enough with politicians who don't tell the truth - and in the face of that grassroots revolution, boy have things changed in Washington.'"

A confident Cruz, excited by his momentum in both early voting states, promised to have a "simple flat tax" instituted in the U.S. by 2018. He pledged to abolish the Internal Revenue Service, dissolve Obamacare and invite a handful of allies to his State of the Union, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Let me say, Mr. Prime Minister, I enjoyed seeing you just recently at the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem," Cruz said, picturing the stuffy cafeteria as the House Chamber circa January 2018.

Cruz, who's developed the reputation of a pariah in Washington, embellished his remarks Tuesday with bits of humor here and there. At one point, Cruz said he would happily invite the Little Sisters of the Poor - a group of Catholic nuns granted temporary relief from Obamacare's birth control mandate by the Supreme Court - to his State of the Union in 2018.

"If you're litigating against nuns, you've probably done something wrong," he quipped.

Minutes later, Cruz joked that by 2018, left-wing billionaire George Soros will have opened "the William Jefferson Clinton museum of youth outreach."

Shifting back to a serious tone, the Texas senator conceded that a State of the Union address from him "sounds distant."

"But let me tell you something," he continued, "all across the state of N.H. people are waking up and they are waking up powerfully."

"I believe that 2016 will be an election like 1980," Cruz said, drawing his loudest applause of the night.

"Tonight the State of the Union is strong and the state of the American people is we are waking up,"

...after being put to sleep by Barry's SOTU address.

I can hear it now: "Ya, I sold you out for a few campaign dollars, but look at this way. You no longer have to worry about a job or American sovereignty, it no longer exist. But don't worry about me, my family, my donors or the GOPe, we are doing just fine. Now enjoy your minority status.

Well, that’s really not a good rib at Cruz. To be funny, comedy has to have at least a little truth to it. That comment failed at that.

Cutting and pasting the same post on every Cruz related thread is almost as pathetic as thinking Trump is the conservative savior.

Look, You spam this site with 40 to 50 repetitive threads a day. You post the exact same inacurate Trump bashing high band width graphics non stop. You post inflammatory Trump and personal insults almost non stop. Now you want to pull in the moderators because I posted similar inflammatory stuff about Cruz? Maybe you need to review your own practices before you start complaining about others.

You are right, I thought you were Isara. But your little “F’ing liar” comment is a bit harsh and trashy, is that what you want this site to be?

Trump supported TARP, auto bailout and Porkulus bill, i.e., Trump is for big government and big businesses.

And, of course, he is for Renewable Fuel Standard (ethanol mandate), so governement can pick winners and losers.

Trump's Record on Free-market Issue: (from the Conservative Review)

Trump has a terrible record on free market issues. The only bright spot is the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing, but this glimmer is countermanded by his repeated support for bailing out Wall Street and the auto industry, and increased stimulus spending. Of particular concern is Trump's belief that the government can use eminent domain powers to seize private property in the name of private economic development. This comes as no surprise, given his support for using eminent domain to profit his own company.

Trump supported the Supreme Court’s 2005 decision in Kelo v. City of London, allowing public authorities to seize private land for economic development by private investors; Trump said, “I happen to agree with [the decision] 100 percent.” (National Review)  This is no surprise given Trump’s attempt to use eminent domain in his own line of work. (Institute for Justice)

Trump supported President Obama’s 2009 stimulus, saying: “The word stimulus is probably not used in its fullest…you know, certain of the things that were given weren't really stimulus. They were pork, as we call it, or they were gifts to certain people. But overall, I think he's [President Obama] doing very well. You do need stimulus and you do have to keep the banks alive.” (CNN

Trump supported TARP, saying, "You had to do something to shore up the banks, because ... you would have had a run on every bank." (CNN

Trump supported the 2008 auto bailout, saying, “I think the government should stand behind them 100 percent. You cannot lose the auto companies. They’re great. They make wonderful products.” He also said that the federal government could “easily save the companies.” (Daily Caller

Trump criticized the Federal Reserve’s intervention in the debt market, saying quantitative easing creates “phony numbers” that mislead the marketplace and “will not ultimately benefit the economy. The dollar will go down in value and inflation will start rearing its ugly head.” (CNBC

Donald Trump has a history of using eminent domain to complete business deals. Multiple times Trump has supported the use of government agencies to take possession of homes and businesses for use in his private business plans. Eminent domain seizures are reserved only for public use of property rather than abuse by the government taking property from one individual and giving to another. (Washington Post

Donald Trump has sought and received crony capitalist tax breaks for his commercial properties in New York. These tax breaks, and even an abatement, force the property taxes of other property owners to rise at the expense of the connected. Special treatment for one business or industry over another with the tax code conflicts with free market principles. (National Review

In 2009, Trump supported Barack Obama's call for limits on the pay of executives. (CNN)
