Heading into Christmas, Ted Cruz had emerged as the clear favorite to kick off the Republican nominating contest with a victory in Iowa. He was racking up endorsements from evangelical leaders/kingmakers and was starting to pull away in state polls. But with less than three weeks to go until the GOP caucus, Cruz now has real reason to worry.
The latest sign Iowa could come down to the wire between him and Donald Trump comes via a new Des Moines Register/Bloomberg state poll, which shows the fiery Texas senator's lead on the loud-mouthed tycoon shrinking from 10 points to 3 points among likely Republican caucusgoers in the past month:
Ted Cruz: 25 percent, down 6 points
Donald Trump: 22 percent, up 1 point
Marco Rubio: 12 percent, up 2 points
Ben Carson: 11 percent, down 2 points
As Ann Selzer, the well-respected director of the poll, points out, the narrowing race isn't the result of a late Trump surge--the Donald's been holding remarkably steady in Iowa for months--as much as an erosion in Cruz's support. "It's hard to say Donald Trump is back, because his support grew only one point," she said. "It seems more a matter of slippage for Cruz."
His drop could be the result of the increased attention that comes with being the favorite--which has included plenty of chatter about his Canadian roots--or it could be explained by something else, including statistical noise. Either way, Cruz doesn't look as strong in Iowa today as he did in late 2015.

Interesting. He’s now in NH???
“Now youâre going to Slate for your news as long as it supports Trump?”
Cruz people are going to CNN, HuffPo, National Review, and Buzzfeed.
Wow. Rush said that???
You know, Rush sometimes flip flops.
BINGO the left wants Trump. Had Trump been in Congress all these years he’d have been placed on the Congressional record so we could know how he votes. I venture to say that after all these decades of being for liberal causes and beliefs his voting record would have eliminated him from any consideration on FR. Yet here we have many on FR singing his praises, magically appending an “R” to the end of his name and Viola a Conservative!
How easily fooled and naive people have become. But hey it worked with Hope and Change.
Slate is not a legitimate news source. But they have played one on TV and on stage.
Really???
I heard he does have a good ground game.
This is a nail biter...
Heidi is VERY worried folks!
What do you think is the strategy of the Democrat left attacking Trump and pushing Cruz?
Well, they’re all pounding Trump as hard as they can. No question about that. Presumably they’re afraid of him. They accuse Cruz of being an extremist, but don’t beat on him nearly as hard.
The Natural Born citizen question is arguable. It’s possible that they want to push Cruz over Trump, and then eliminate him by lawsuit after he is nominated. Since Justice Roberts seems to be subject to blackmail, they may feel that they have a lock on the Supreme Court on that issue.
Trumpophiles would quote the devil himself if he had anything negative to say anout Ted Cruz.
Well, instead of boys will be boys he said these push polls are just part of a campaign. Same message.
But the part about:
Rush even said that for all those calls about him letting Trump off the hook, that he has said all along candidates will take care of Trump.
That’s almost word for word.
The think tank at Goldman Sachs is hard at work crafting the most appropriate verbiage to fully capture the hearts (and wallets) of their valued voters.....
Yes and he even said trump was not a conservative....
Did you catch that?
No, I missed it. What exactly did he say? I swear I think Rush is jealous of Trump's influence. Why else would he try to sabotage our only hope of defeating the establishment? He's like the GOPe saying they'd rather a Democrat win than Trump, same effect.
Cruz’s campaign didn’t do it. A Super Pac did it.
I think that it’s a obvious fact, or perhaps you don’t know what conservatism is.
You will have to get a repeat of todays program, he’s said it before as has Levin and others..
Trump is not ideological at all...he does not think in those terms, in my opinion.
Was Ross Perot conservative?
How about Teddy Roosevelt...?
Yeah, then Cruz used a push poll tested attack on Trump the next day...
BTW, that is not a slam on Trump...it just states the obvious.
No, not a slam on your part but Rush is very influential. When he makes statements like that, when he cheers Cruz hitting Trump yet criticizes Trump for hitting Cruz, he is inflicting damage.
Intentional or not, Rush is pushing for Cruz at Trump’s expense. But he has to realize Cruz will never be President. Cruz doesn’t have Trump’s command of the media, he doesn’t have billions to denounce donor money, doesn’t have the business experience to restructure the U.S. economy.
He will never have Trump’s fans, never have Trump’s willingness to stomp on political correctness, never have Trump’s invincibility to the left. They will destroy Cruz in record time.
Sorry, climbing off my soapbox now.
