I think that Bernie is a Stalinist. Not the kind who kills people but the kind who thought the evil Stalin did was in a good cause.
I suspect a lot of folks in the South would support Cruz with or without Phil's endorsement but it certainly doesn't hurt. Cruz is a believer and that weighed in on Phil's decision to support him and this will also influence a lot of southern voters. Trump gets good turnouts in his events in the South so we shall see how it goes

When you look at the qualifications laid out as succinctly as Phil has laid them out, and note that of all the candidates only Cruz fits the bill (which I agree with), then this is actually the most well-reasoned endorsement I have ever seen.
Cruz does better against Hillary than Trump in most polls.
