I think their backup plan is to focus resources on an ‘independent’ candidate in one state like Ohio. Have the independent win Ohio, neither the GOP or RATs get 270 EVs, and the House of Reps picks the President.

Interesting theory, but isn't likely to happen. Ohio is not an anomaly state like a number of those I could name with an independent streak. It is arguably more reflective of America than any other state you could name.
