Bob Dole, Who Opposed Ronald Reagan in 1980, Thinks Donald Trump is Better Than Ted Cruz

Full Title: Shortened to fit. Bob Dole, Who Opposed Ronald Reagan in 1980 as Too Fringe, Thinks Donald Trump is Better Than Ted Cruz

Former Senator Bob Dole opposed Ronald Reagan in 1980. Dole feared Reagan would cause substantial losses for the GOP. In fact, Dole was so terrified of what Reagan would do to the GOP that in March of 1980, as Reagan was on course to secure the GOP's nomination, Dole publicly and privately urged former President Gerald Ford to get into the race to stop Reagan. This Bob Dole, the Dole who lost the 1996 election to Bill Clinton, thinks Donald Trump is way more viable as a candidate than Ted Cruz.

It's official. The Establishment is going in the tank for Donald Trump. Trump's supporters, who think he will burn it all down and slay the establishment, should consider that first Trump defended Mitch McConnell against Ted Cruz. Now Bob Dole is defending Trump against Ted Cruz. All of this comes on the heels of establishment oriented lobbyists saying they would far prefer Trump to Cruz because Trump is malleable.

Takes one to know one and I hope the Trump supporters realize it.

I’m a Cruz guy all the way, win or lose. Trump has definitely tapped the general frustrations, anger, and anxiety the US is facing. And I’m glad he’s given the majority of us a national stage. But, he’s not a conservative. He is, at his core, an opportunist. When the GOPe would rather Trump be the nominee, vice Cruz...that speaks volumes. PLUS, Cruz’s calling Mitch a liar and then having that as part of the Congressional record is priceless.

Why does anyone care what Bob Dole thinks in 2016?

Looks to me like the Establishment has realized that it’s boiling down to a two man race, Trump vs Cruz, and of the two, they think that Trump is less threatening to their oligarchy.

I think that, among other things, they perceive Trump as an ego candidate who can be more easily malleable to their will after the fact. They may be mistaken.

Either way, their ‘support’ isn’t necessarily a positive.

Disclaimer: I like Ted. I also think that overall, he doesn’t stand a chance, as if he were the nominee, the establishment would step all over themselves to vote for Hillary out of spite. I’m entertained by Donald, and like the idea of throwing a wrench into the Establishment’s gears. I’m unsure that he would actually deliver on his promises.

That said, what I’m truly sick and tired of are the Doles, the Bushes, the McCains, the Romneys, and all the other mealy-mouthed losers we’ve had foisted off on us over the years. What have they ever done for us?

Bob Dole voted for GATT after saying he received more calls from the people against it than any other bill. Thanks for nothing Bob Dole, a traitor.

...eventually destroyed the establishment. ;-)

I don't know that Samson in the example you want. Samson's problem was that he kept wanting to get close to the enemy (Delilah) and compromised to do so. Yes, he eventually destroyed the enemy, but he had to die in order to do so, after he was completely and utterly defeated and humiliated.

And He polled almost as well in those primaries against Reagan as Bush is now.

Perhaps because Cruz has sponsored so few bills that have become law

Speaking of Bob Dole's judgment... let's not forget whose nomination he enthusiastically backed for Obama's Secretary of Health and Human Services. Does that baby-killer supporter in the background look familiar?

Well it certainly appears that the more religious among us want everyone to believe that Cruz is the 2nd coming. He’s so pure and gentle. He knows scripture by memory, heck, he lives it!

Careful libby, you logic is working against you on this one.

<1>Bob Dole popping back up

Now that's funny.

Seriously, no matter who the GOP nominee is, the press will be relentless in the smears and criticisms. And, if that GOP candidate becomes president, that will only continue. Who amongst the GOP field can stand up to that?
