Not particularly surprising when you understand that people who honestly worked to gain legal status and citizenship don’t care for those who filch it on the cheap .

Bingo. My grandfather had to work in an experimental mine (read dangerous) to emigrate from Italy to the US in 1921.

Those were dangerous jobs but the desire to become American was great. We were not even allowed to speak Italian. Had to be AN AMERICAN!

Not sure where your grandfather settled, but Americanization Mutual Societies were thriving at various parts of the country at that time.

We still have an active lodge in our town.

If you read their statement of purpose, they could pass for a chapter of the DAR or SAR, just an Italian version. Unlike today's ethnic grievance and Balkanization lobbies, their purpose was to get Italian immigrants integrated into American life as quickly as possible.

Ethnic Italians make some of the best Americans, including my father-in-law.
