I suspect much of the legend goes back to the era that pre-dated the widespread usage of electric lighting. The increased illumination of a full moon would allow those already pre-disposed to commit their crimes at night a better opportunity to ply their trades and make their getaways.

Having said that, one of my most memorable nights as a Military Police officer was 10/31/97 which was not only a full moon, but also Halloween and a pay day weekend.

Yep, it’s easier to move around at night when there’s a full moon. Since I walk my dog in an unlit park at night, I’ve taken to looking up moonrise and set times for the particular passes of the moon. It makes a real difference.

So, for those who are out and about and up to no good, more light = more opportunities for mischief.
