I suspect the crafty Russians want an independent Kurdish state with the goal in mind of undermining Turkey by agitating the Kurds inside Turkey. Consider Kosovo (essentially Albanians) being broken off of Serbia by NATO. The Russians may want payback also for what NATO did to Serbia.
