Ruby Baby - DION owned it. Fagen sounds like a jazzy Steely Dan and that’s not bad, but he didn’t have the feeling that Dion DiMucci had in his version.
We listened to Big Mama Thorton (1960 show somewhere, possibly in Europe), doing “Hound Dog”. Now that is great Chicago blues. She did it before Elvis did. He rocked it up.
Good old Leiber and Stoller. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t have the Rock and Roll we got. Somebody should post a list of the songs they wrote and who recorded the R&R versions.
Just two Jewish guys who were called by their black musician friends as “two of the blackest songwriters around”. Sort of like “Moe meets Motown” - How sweet it was!
