They were proto-Nazi. Many of them wore swastika amulets as an esoteric Theosophist talisman in the trenches as German soldiers before there was a Nazi party. How that came about is an interesting story told in the video series “The Occult Reich”. Swastikas were worn on the helmets of the Freikorps in the early 20’s and they became the core elements of the SA Brown Shirts as Nazism was born.

That’s right, the swastika as mystical symbol (I saw it in Vietnam) became the political emblem of German fascism in the 1920’s.
Nowadays, any organization of young Germans rising up to confront the Muslim hordes will be denounced as neo-Nazi.
