This "poor" farmer who couldn't afford American born pickers apparently had a cool 2 million laying around to drop on an iffy project to develop a picking machine.

When small business owners say their business is doing poorly and they need to lay off and cut back they fail to mention that their personal net worth is in the millions.

Almost none of the 20 million illegal trespassers work in farming.

Lying SOB’s.

The truth is farming has become so automated there's almost no labor involved anymore.

On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders would allow illegal immigrants already here to become citizens, and would continue the Obama administration policies.

If mass citizenship were to happen, these suddenly "legal" citizens would be entitled to at least minimum wage. A minimum wage that the farmers are not willing to pay.

In essence, granting citizenship to unskilled workers is a path to unemployment for them as their prior employer will again turn to illegal immigrants who will work for less than minimum wage.

I found it interesting that you had to read almost all the way to the end of the sob story article to find the real solution:

He (Mr. Knorr) says mechanization is his future. He continues to pour time and money into a laser-guided device to remove stems from peppers, which pickers now do by hand in the field. Another farmer in the area developed a mechanical carrot harvester.

It sounds like Mr. Knorr and the other farmer are getting really smart really fast. In fact it sounds a lot like what happened in the mid-1950s when the Eisenhower administration was told that tomato harvesting would be ruined if they proceeded with "operation wetback."

They dd it anyway. Within 18 months, a good mechanical tomato harvesting machine had been invented and multiple versions were on the market. Within 24 months, any grower who didn't have one was out of business.

They don’t want to farm either. They want gray market construction work, they want to cut hair and do gardens without paying taxes.
Then they grab a number and file false tax returns for thousands using the child tax credit.
They also claim they don’t know who fathers are but keep getting pregnant for money, EBT, WIC and free healthcare here in CA.

Why do field work here unless they can grow and sell profitable marijuana?

That’s the way it goes these days, it isn’t that we need more criminal activity from their other countrymen.

LOVE those pix. Way more sophisticated than the early commercial versions, too. Makes me wonder why I even bother growing my own maters . . . beyond the fact that I enjoy playing in the dirt at times.

I wonder what does israel do for all their harvesting? I know they are a big produce supplier for Europe. I doubt they hand harvest. I know they use a lot of wise watering techniques.

I think Israel hires the labor of their neighbors.

Farmers need seasonal workers, and there is a program to allow workers in for harvest work legally. Farmers that choose to hire illegals claim that program doesn’t work but the funny thing is that many farmers do make it work.
