Russia is 'trying to draw Turkey into a fight' in Syria, and it may be working

The Russian Ministry of Defense warned Turkey against launching a military incursion into Syria last week, announcing on Thursday that it had seen "growing signs" that Turkish forces were preparing to intervene to bolster rebel forces battling pro-regime troops in the north.

Some experts say, however, that Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be trying to bait Turkey into entering the Syrian battlefield in order to retaliate for Ankara's decision to down a Russian warplane in November.

"Russia is trying to draw Turkey into a fight to avenge the downing of its jet. Putin is confident he can win," retired Brig. Gen. Naim Baburoglu, an adviser to the Ankara-based National Security and Foreign Policy Research Center, told al-Monitor last week.

In the words of Admiral Ackbar: "It's a trap!"

All these articles about the Baltics being Russia's target - please. The Baltics are useless with no value. But if Russia can force Turkey to shoot first and thus nullifying Article 5 of the NATO treaty? Russia can eliminate Turkey as a middle east rival. Turkey is pretty much hated by the Arab world - even if it is a Muslim country - they just ethnically hate the Turks.

Russia would not even fight this war in a conventional way I figure. Just day and night missile bombardment on Turkey would break her. Last I looked Russia has enough conventional missiles to last a year of constant firing.

“Russia is ‘trying to draw Turkey into a fight’ in Syria, and it may be working.”

What a shame....

” Turkey is pretty much hated by the Arab world - even if it is a Muslim country - they just ethnically hate the Turks.”

They’re not the only ones!

The Baltics are just piss poor with no resources. But you break Turkey and you hobble NATO forever.

Lot of places more strategic: Straight of Malacca, Panama Canal, Suez Canal, Straight of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles.

Which is why all those Russians moved home when the USSR dissolved, right?

This is stupid. It would hurt Russia deeply to get into a war with Turkey, especially at the times of low oil prices.

Turkey is one of Russia's top oil customer.

You are also crazy if you think NATO would not side with Turkey, even if they fired first.

How about why your theory of how Russia will invade Poland next?

Wouldn’t a war in the Mideast raise oil prices?

Ahhh yes, our dear Allies, the Turks and Saudis - supporters of Islamist rebels across the arab world, secret businessmen with ISIS, organizers of “refugee” invasion into Europe

They thought deposing Assad and installing their own puppets would be so easy, especially with the tacit backing of Obama.

Now they find that creating war can have terrible consequences.

“You are also crazy if you think NATO would not side with Turkey, even if they fired first. “

Sorry, I don’t see Nato or the US coming to Turkey’s aid if Turkey fired the first shot. Not even to the extent of another Phony War. There’s too much of a downside and no up.

Poland is bypassed - Russia is selling her oil and gas direct to Germany. Why invade Poland? So Russia can rule poor and resource-less people who hate Russia?

A war with Turkey may raise oil prices. A war with Turkey may do the Turkish military a favor and get Erdogan ousted.

Just war gaming here. I have no idea if this is true or not. Business Insider is not exactly a foreign policy specialist news-source.

We should insist that Obama and Kerry go to Turkey and negotiate a great deal like they did with Iran. Then we should let Putin know what they’re up to.

It gives Russia the opportunity to prove that NATO and the US is useless and will not support Islam. They get a twofer. They get to kick Turkey’s butt and the West won’t lift a finger for fear they will bring Mohammed down upon their countries.

Brilliant plan.

No one is writing how the Kurds have become Russia's ground army in Syria. Iraqi Kurdish news media declared Russia is for an independent Kurdistan.

We live in interesting times.
