The Real Ted Cruz
http://www.slate.com ^ | January 10, 2016 | William Saletan

Posted on 02/13/2016 1:20:39 PM PST by NKP_Vet

Ted Cruz is the only true conservative running for president. That's the message of his campaign: He's the only senator who stood and fought against amnesty, Obamacare, and Planned Parenthood. His finest hour was the defeat of immigration reform three years ago. Democrats wanted to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. Cruz said no. He took on the establishment and won.

It's a good story, and the immigration fight tells us a lot about Cruz. But the fight didn't happen the way he says it did. Cruz didn't marshal the opposition or even take a firm stand. He's a lawyer, not a leader. He chose his words exquisitely so that down the road--say, in a future campaign for president--he could position himself on either side of the immigration debate. And he delivered, with angelic piety, speeches that he now claims were lies.

Cruz told his version of the story last month at a campaign debate in Las Vegas. The "battle over amnesty," he said, was "a time for choosing." In that battle, Cruz stood with Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama to secure the border. Sen. Marco Rubio, Cruz's Republican presidential rival, stood on the other side, colluding with Democrats to push "a massive amnesty plan." "I have never supported legalization," Cruz told the debate audience. In fact, he asserted, "I led the fight against [Rubio's] legalization and amnesty."

I've studied nearly every word Cruz uttered during the immigration showdown. I've put it together in a timeline that runs from January 2013, when Cruz was sworn in, to the end of June 2013, when the Senate passed the bill. The timeline, which you can read here, shreds Cruz's mythical account.

This is a very good article. Shows how the lawyer/manipulative mind of Ted Cruz works.

"I studied nearly every word the Texas senator uttered during the immigration showdown. He may be the most spectacular liar ever to run for president."

Whatever Slate says, the opposite is true. 100% of the time.

Eh, I’m sure the article has merits, but a) it’s old and b) it’s from the seething liberals at Slate. I complain when Cruzers do this, so I’m duty and honor bound to complain now, too, even though I think Cruz is slimy.

We don’t need to turn to liberals to find reasons for or against our candidates.

What next? A Salon article? May be a HuffPost editorial on Cruz?

We know who Slate doesn’t like. You want the truth, listen to Sen. Sessions. Neither does the Establishment!!!

Rush Limbaugh says that if your a conservative then you must rally around Ted Cruz!!! Ted Cruz’s rating from the Conservative Union is 97% Jeff Sessions is 80% Mike Lee is 100% voting record!!!

“I think Cruz is slimy”

Let me guess — you think Trump is just plain old honest businessman who simply wants to make America great again.

I know it was from Slate, but the writer claims to be republican. It’s long, but if you have time read it. It’s a good article on how the mind of a conniving lawyer works and that’s all I think Cruz is. Never seen a candidate that can lie as easily as he does and not bat an eye. A truly amazing gift.

William Saletan? Isn't his DUhmmie name "Backdoor Bill"? I think it is. And it if isn't, it should be.

A self described "liberal Republican", Saletan came out strongly against the re-election of George W. Bush. He described his disenchantment with the modern Republican Party in a series of dispatches from the 2004 Republican Convention.[2]

Saletan has written several articles about bioethics and sexual ethics, criticizing what he sees as homophobia within the Roman Catholic Church.[3]

I was paying close attention at the time. Cruz was and is correct.

But if I may be so bold, where was Trump on these issues?

I'm just saying, look at the thread. Every time someone does this, submits an article from Slate, Salon, NYT, HuffPo, it totally backfires. It happens every day at this point, from both Cruz and Trump camps, and it's an annoying distraction and never pans out the way the OP intended.

Every time it happens, I think of this:

The truth is what Cruz said in April of 2015 after his presidential campaign began and after the comprehensive immigration bill of 2013 was over and done with.
