Senior U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia found dead at West Texas ranch

Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa. According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said he was among those notified about Scalia's death.

"I was told it was this morning," Biery said of Scalia's death. "It happened on a ranch out near Marfa. As far as the details, I think it's pretty vague right now as to how," he said. "My reaction is it's really unfortunate with any death. And now, politically, in the presidential cycle we're in my educated guess is nothing will happen before the next president is elected."

Goodbye Republic. I blame all those “conservatives” who refused to vote in 2012. “I just won’t hold my nose anymore.” You sunk any chances of a recovery of the United States as founded. “Romney wouldn’t have appointed a conservative.” I said “chances of a recovery.” *spit*

filibuster

Filibuster? They have a majority. Hole it up in the Judiciary committee until the last possible day and then vote not to confirm or move to the floor of the Senate.

“Poison.”

That’s what I’m thinking. Like in Russia.

RIP to Justice Scalia.

How long did the Senate drag out the Loretta Lynch appointment? That could possibly show if they have the guts to do the same with an Obama Supreme Court nominee.

Found an article. Snip.

What happens in a Supreme Court tie?

“Although rare, 4-4 ties are hardly unheard-of—justices do recuse themselves from time to time. A split decision effectively upholds the ruling of the lower court (presumably a state supreme court). In the event of such a tie, the court typically issues what’s known as a per curiam decision. The opinion in such a decision is issued under the court’s name, as opposed to consisting of a majority and a minority opinion. Justices, however, may attach dissenting opinions to the per curiam decision if they like—as happened in Bush v. Gore.

When a 4-4 deadlock does occur, the case is not deemed to have set any sort of precedent. Tradition holds that the court’s per curiam opinion in such ties is usually very, very terse, often consisting of no more than a single sentence: “The judgment is affirmed by an equally divided court.” But it’s a safe bet that the opinion in Kerry v. Bush or Bush v. Kerry would be a lot longer than usual.”

Agree. Will we ever find out?

Look at Breitbart....did they ever release the truth?

I know there’s a big age difference, between the two and that a person 79 years old is more likely to suffer a heart attack than someone much younger.....but....

Did Justice Scalia have any known health issues?

I’m not so sure. She’s always struck me as the sort of person who wants to drop dead on the job.

Yes, that was pointed out to me. I mentioned the wrong RINO.

To think our nation’s future may hinge on Mitch McConnell makes me want to vomit.

One wonders what kind of security a Supreme Court justice has on a daily basis. Certainly as much as any candidate, or wife of former perv president, one would think.

Minimal security. A driver, VIP flag for local police on the security system, regular reviews of any staff who works directly for him, otherwise not like you would imagine. SCOTUS justices are really low profile.

>> He can nominate,but he can’t appoint <<

Almost correct, but not quite. O’Bama theoretically could make a recess appointment, which would hold only until the new Senate is seated in January 2017.

But for that very reason, I think the ‘Pubs are not gonna let the Senate go into formal recess as long as the Big O is in the WH.

He was a good man. One can only hope that the GOP grows a backbone and fights Obama tooth and nail because we all know that Obama wants to appoint a flaming lefty to the bench.

My favorite SC justice. I am in mourning and praying for his family and friends, but boy would I love to hear him chat with John Adams.

If they don’t fight on this it is betrayal.

Betrayal is the principal plank in the Republican Platform.
