Protesters: Arrest JPSO deputies in Central City fatal shooting

A group of protesters circled outside New Orleans Police Department headquarters Friday afternoon (Feb. 12), calling for the arrest and trial of two Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies who shot and killed a 22-year-old man during a nearly five-mile-long police chase Monday night that started in Terrytown and ended across the river in Central City.

Sheriff's Office officials said two deputies, Kenneth Bonura and Henry DeJean, opened fire on Eric Harris in fear for their lives after Harris threw his car in reverse near Simon Bolivar Avenue and Phillip Street. But protesters, as well as Harris' girlfriend – who was in the car with him that night – questioned that account.

"This was a blatant murder," said Malcolm Suber, one of the organizers of Friday afternoon's protest.

The police chase Monday night started shortly before 8 p.m. at Oakwood Center mall. Three women told a deputy in the mall that Harris pointed a gun at them, Sheriff Newell Normand shortly after the shooting. The deputy confronted Harris, Normand said, at which time he escaped into the parking lot.

Harris' car was later spotted on the Crescent City Connection and a chase ensued, authorities said, ending in Central City when Harris crashed his car into a pole. Normand said Harris put the car in reverse and the deputies, fearing for their lives, opened fire on the car.

Harris' girlfriend, Teyshara Blouin, told Fox 8 that Harris did not put the car in reverse after crashing into the pole.

"He never touched it," she told the television station. "He asked me, was I all right? As soon as he said that, they started shooting."

It's unclear how many shots the deputies fired. Photos of his car appear to show multiple bullet holes in the driver's side.

Although his girlfriend denies he had a weapon inside the mall, police say they recovered a gun from Harris' car. According to the sheriff's office, Harris had previous arrests for weapons violations, resisting arrest and narcotics violations. Harris was also on probation at the time he was killed for possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, simple escape and possession of heroin.

Normand said Harris took off, and two nearby deputies, Henry DeJean and Kenneth Bonura, chased him. Somewhere near the Crescent City Connection, he allegedly rammed one of their units, then made his way to Central City, where he crashed his car into a light pole. The deputies took action when they say they felt their lives were in danger.

Yep

"He got a son right here, he got a momma, he got sisters, he got brothers, he got a whole family that need him. We need him to be here with us today and now he's not here," said Harris' cousin, Micquila Harris.

What an appalling, but typical, lead paragraph.

Here's a more accurate version:

A mob, its mindless members still whipped into a frenzy by cynical race-hustling politicians who seek votes and a permanent class of ignorant, dependent saps, aggressively attempted to provoke the police.

Completely lacking in facts, evidence, timeline or other important details, they nevertheless demanded mob justice (i.e. no justice at all) of two more law enforcement officers based strictly on the color of their skin and/or the skin of a 'victim' who quite probably was breaking the law and/or threatening the police at the time of the probably-justified shooting.

In yet another display of a complete lack of self-awareness, these idiots then had the brass neck to complain about the possibility of knee-jerk race-based snap judgments.

It would never make it past an editor, but it's much more accurate.

They just want to prevent white men from having authority. That’s all. If it works, it will backfire and shortly after all authority will be in the hands of extremely hateful white men.

Let me simplify. Mostly black Orleans parish hates mostly white Jefferson parish. J.parish is, however, the place to visit to steal. When said criminals venture over the parish line they take offense at being pursued by white JP deputies when they escape back into the hood. They expect NO recriminations for armed or violent crimes much less pursuit and gunfire from JP’s . Especially when their homie cops understand and excuse them. You dont mess with JP officers. They respond almost instantly and take no B S. Cops coming into the hood from a white parish to apprehend a black thug from New Orleans is so unfair to such enterprising young “businessmen”! If there were malls to rob in Orleans parish this typical family man wouldn’t be perished!
