20,000 tanks is something like 50-100 armored divisions, an order of magnitude more than the entire world has. Maybe 20,000 personnel assigned to armored or cavalry units, implying 200-500 tanks?
The Saudis have about 15K Hummvees. Maybe they’re counting those under ‘tanks?’
I was wrong about the Saudis buying from the brits; their frontline takes are M1s. Wonder where I got that from? Somebody out there bought Challengers.
20k is way too many tanks in this case, but the world has far more than 20k tanks. Russia alone has 15,000.
Not according to this: http://www.globalfirepower.com/armor-tanks-total.asp.
Im reading approximately 80,000 (+- 5000) MBTs in the world. If you include light tanks or other lightly armored vehicles in the Saudi count, it would be very doable.
Given the size of the logistical tail required for fuel *alone*, I tend to doubt it.
Unless it's something more like this:
Some dumb reporter is probably counting all ground vehicles as tanks.
